Nah I said the night he was drafted that Nix’s high floor and Payton’s good coaching will make this kid good but not great.

What makes me nervous about the Broncos is that they are drafting well. Meinerz, Bonitto, Cooper, Nix. The 3rd rd pick Ellis has 3 straight games with a sack.

They are making good picks and we have not overall the last 2 drafts.

That's true, but some were bad decisions or just off-target/off-line. And those are things he needs to clean up, obviously, if he's going to lead us to another SB.

I'll have to see another season of them before that assessment. They have not performed well against good teams...beat bad/injured ones. Usually there is one "break out' performance against a quality opponent...when a team is on the "come ups". That hasnt happened so far...which is why I'm labeling them a product of a perfect storm until proven otherwise.

The 24 Chargers are in that category too...their only claim to fame is beating the Donks. They've lost to the Steelers, Ravens and Chiefs.

If Wison were still on the Donks...they likely would be in a similar position this year. If they passed on Nix and had taken Bowers...probably better. Nix has already matched Wilson's int total at 8...and is 8 TDs behind with four games left.

Picking that low will do that. Maybe the Chiefs should just go 8-9 for a few seasons to get them saweet draft picks.

I think DEN will probably make the playoffs, but I also think they're probably a one-and-done team; it's just too early, as several have said already.

One of the things that was interesting about last night was that Payton trusted Nix enough to throw deep from his own EZ. And several other times he allowed Nix to test the CLE secondary in spots like 3rd and long, when most HCs would probably have had him either handoff on a draw or throw some kind of screen. Something safe. I think that's telling about where Nix really is in his development. And it's also interesting that Nix has thrown a 14/4 TD-INT ratio over his last 8 games.

Meinerz-3rd rd
Bonitto-2nd rd
Ellis-3rd rd
Cooper-7th rd

McMillan kid who picked off Winston was undrafted. The white Iowa corner they missed badly last night was a 3rd rd pick. Also getting something from Franklin and Vele drafted in the 4th and 7th.

Nix is the only one I listed drafted in the first rd

Bonitto was a polarizing guy on the draft forum but someone that a lot of folks really liked as a pass rush specialist. I know I wanted him over Cook in that draft.

The Broncos, annoyingly, have made some decent picks of late.

As I posted earlier...all of Nix's int have been when he's trailing. That's a bit of a red flag...especially if a good team can pin it's ears back.

We'll see how that trend plays out in his sophomore season...

I think most here saw him with an Alex Smith ceiling. I still think that's pretty accurate. Granted, the Donks are further along this year than I thought they'd be as a team. I saw them as a .500 team at best (8-9 wins). Looks like they will get to 10, outside shot at 11. They're almost gtd. the last Wild Card spot at this point, barring a complete collapse.

Nix has had mixed results (yes, he's a rookie). I've watched about 4 whole games of him playing, including the one last night. I wasn't impressed by much of what I saw last night other than the piss missile over the middle to Mims on 3rd and long near his own endzone. THAT was an elite throw.

If he reaches Alex Smith peak, that's a pretty good QB. A guy that can win double digit games with a solid team around him, get you into the playoffs and occasionally get a W. Do I see him as a guy that can go into Buffalo, Baltimore or KC in the playoffs and knock off those teams? Not really. I'm not even sure I could see him doing it in Pittsburgh or Houston either. So, basically, for Denver to go ANYWHERE in the playoffs (short term and long term) they're gonna need the games at home. And that's hard to see them getting with KC and a Harbaugh led Chargers team in the AFC West. I see a lot of potential Wild Cards in their future and that's about it. Which, in all fairness, is a lot better than what it has been for the past near decade.

Well yeah, that would make sense. And it's probably par for the course for all rookie QBs, isn't it? Or, hasn't it, I guess.

My point was simply he's not throwing multiple INTs per game anymore, and he is throwing downfield significantly more, which involves more risk, yes?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's going to be a top-tier QB any time soon. Just saying, he's progressing in a positive direction under Payton's tutelage. And right now, he's statistically one of the best rookie QBs at this point, if not the best.

Of course, they could all fall off a cliff in 2025. We'll just have to wait and see.

He's a system QB but Payton has a pretty good system.

List the pending FAs. I've asked you to do it before.

I think Denver probably does need to re-sign Bolles because there just aren't many alternatives out there.

They should also extend Bonitto. though he is under contract through 2025.

Now list another important one.

Also, Denver will have 50 million more dollars available next year based on dead money alone. And another 30 million the year after. Not exactly cash strapped.

Also, Denver can't reap the benefits of a rookie QB contract because, unlike other teams, they have to pay their players?

You're not even making sense at this point.

According to Over the Cap, Denver will have about $57 million in cap space next year, but that's with only 37 players under contract on the active roster.

As far as Denver not being able to reap the benefits of a rookie contract like other teams do, I think he's referring to the fact that Denver is still paying Wilson this year and next ($53 mil. this year and $32 mil. next), so in essence, instead of getting to enjoy the 3, 4, & 5 millions dollar salary for a rookie QB the next 3 years, you're still paying a starting QB $56 mil. this year and $36 mil. next year. Year 3 will be your time to strike, but then you'll be talking about an extension/renegotiation after year 3 and a BIG salary bump (assuming you all decide to keep Nix long term).
