This was all fairly close to my initial reaction.

But as we've seen/heard more, it doesn't sound like a ball placement issue. It was a sight read that Mahomes missed.

He didn't pick up on Nixon's depth and the fact that the rub route never really had a chance. His best decision at that point is probably to have Pacheco keep it at the mesh, but if he's gonna pull it, outside shoulder is the only throw he could've made there.

And he clearly didn't even attempt that.

I'm not criticizing the ball placement because ultimately that window never really existed on a throw over the top. There's noplace he could've put that ball to complete it, IMO. But there WAS if he hit the sight read right and threw it back shoulder to Moore.

It was a mental error. I think it's okay to say "Yeah, that one's on Pat" at that point. And doing so isn't holding him to some all-world standard. That's a pretty easy pre-snap read.

It's a decision that really should've been made before the ball was snapped.

There's just no way Rice could've reasonably taken Nixon out of that play unless Nixon was just flying downhill. And if the read keys are THAT tight, don't pull the ball.

I guess that's on Mahomes as well, he needs to just do better.
Try to stay focused... I know that's hard for those in the UK...

We are talking about yesterday's game. Mahomes not throwing to Pacheco on the first drive on 1st and goal and his bad read pick were two big contributing factors to the loss.

As I have said previously, Moore is a huge disappointment this year, but the overall offensive woes is more than just our WR's. They own the biggest percentage of the blame, but Pat isn't playing to last years level as well.

I think that INT was 60/40 Skyy and Mahomes. Skyy just slows down for some reason because he doesnt track footballs. The ball was a tad overthrown but instead of jumping earlier or trying to turn on the jets he...slows down.

The MVS skinny post drop was the most infuriating play before the Skyy route ****up.

Scantling had a clear shot with separation for a big gain or a TD. Patrick had the same surrender cobra reaction when he dropped that too. I threw my hat across the room, because of the dumbass look he gave to the sideline.

That ball should have been thrown at 6 yards to the outside on a rope... Hate Sky all you want, but again, this was on Mahomes. Chase Daniels just did a spot on 810 and said the same thing. That rub route only works when the slot defenders is playing bump and run. As DJ said, it should have been given to 10 on the RPO, instead of thrown. This was obvious presnap.

We are talking about the performances of our shitty WRs. If you want to talk about Mahomes, there's a Mahomes thread. If you want to talk specifically about situations in yesterday's game like the missed Pacheco throw, there's a game day thread for that.

You keep on saying Patrick isn't playing to last years level. He isn't playing to last years level because he's throwing to guys who mostly can't get open, can't catch contested catches, drop the ball and run the wrong routes.

Pat always says he's responsible when plays go bad, which is exactly what he's supposed to do as QB, and what he's always done, so I never pay a ton of attention to what he says about his performances in the post-game pressers. It's just boilerplate.

go back and look at the clip. I think Mahomes didn't see Nixon with all the bodies between him and where he was putting the ball. So that's on Mahomes.

However, replay it at half-speed, and look at it as if Skyy had run full speed through the whole route instead of slowing down. My guess is that he's at least a full stride farther downfield, and at the catchpoint when Nixon gets his hands on it. Now, does Skyy catch the ball at that point? Maybe not. Probably not. But he would've been in perfect position to able to try and defend that INT certainly. And note when Pat releases that ball; he's anticipating Skyy running top speed, because if Skyy does, he's right there when the ball arrives.

Still, i think the best possible outcome there would've been for Pat to throw that ball away for an INC. Trying to fit it in there to Skyy was probably a bad decision. But Skyy didn't help things by inexplicably slowing down.

But this isn't about one play, or one game. These gaffes by the passing offense have been going on for at least 5 weeks now. And we know that most of them are on the WRs, not Pat.

I mean, let's go ahead and say that Mahomes was 100% responsible for that INT, whatever. I'll give you that one, if we can talk truthfully about all the other missed opportunities in previous games where Pat delivered perfect passes to MVS, JWat or Skyy.

Mahomes is not having his best year, but these WRs aren't helping him out at all either. They aren't raising their level of play to help out their struggling QB. Or struggling OC, or HC or whoever you want to call out. Aside from Rice, they've actually all shrunk over the last 5 or so weeks, if that's actually possible.

Ps. I got second hand embarrassment reading that comment. It's such a poor attempt at a jibe because not only does it not make any sense, it isn't in any way slightly insulting.

Here's the thing (or where I'm at, at least)-

The front office and coaching staff are in constant communication always.

Veach surely was all off-season.

The front office AND coaching staff therefore felt good about assuming that everyone would take reasonable steps forward year two in the system. They added a #2 pick (Rice) to a #2 pick (Moore), a '21 #1 pick (Toney) to have 3 young guys with upside. Returned two vets (MVS and Watson) as well as bringing in a WR with nice production in a similar system in Ritchie.

Set aside your personal feelings about this decision for a minute and consider this-

EVERY SINGLE RETURNING WR HAS REGRESSED TO THE POINT OF BEING ALMOST UNPLAYABLE. I mean, an ENTIRE POSITION GROUP.

I mean, what?

How is that even possible? They got WORSE, all of them.

And the front office and staff stood pat, saying they had confidence they'd get it together.

I have a lot of faith in Veach and Andy...but it's clearly not happening, and the only guy that you can count on to make plays is the rookie, Rice.

EVERYONE ELSE GOT SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE.

It has to be the changes in the coaching staff. I mean, doesn't it? EB rubbed some people the wrong way, but as sloppy as everything has been this season, does Nagy bear some scrutiny? Is he not as detail oriented? Beyond just the regression of the entire WR room, the rest of the offense has been penalty prone and sloppy as well. And the first year WR coach? How do you STILL not have guys running the right routes? Even the veterans?

I counseled patience all season long, but we're running out of runway here, and not seeing any consistency from anyone but the rookie. That makes no sense at all.

Long Juju Silver cannot have been THAT responsible for the difference between the #1 offense by almost every measure and....this. Juju, who can barely even get snaps on a shitty NE team.

And I don't think it's a coincidence that our thinnest WR group of the season yielded some of our most cohesive offense.

I say we do one more game with a deeper rotation to see what happens if we work James in at a higher rate and Toney. See what happens if those guys get 50% of the snaps along with Rice and I guess Watson.

The try-outs have to stop. You can't just keep sending guys out there expecting for someone to leap out at you. We're a dozen games in - you have what you have. Take the bubble wrap off Toney, re-integrate James, scale Rice up to 80+% and you have 4 games (after next week) to make it all work.
