Any WR drafted, even 1st rd, is gonna be started off slower than people like. This has always happened with Andy Reid

Maybe.

But that's money spent and we're still the 1 seed right now. They probably win more games if they get the ball to Rice more earlier as well.

Depends - who did we elect to NOT pay to make that happen?

Let's say we don't sign Taylor but instead go with Wylie and sign Hopkins. You really that confident that things would change significantly? Moreover, how do you actually do that? Taylor was signed as a possible LT, Smith then fell in our laps. If you commit to Wylie early in FA, you have no way of knowing if you're going to get Smith late like we did and Wylie was never any kind of LT option so you'd have STILL had to pursue a LT pretty aggressively somewhere.

A more clean analysis would be Omenihu - don't sign Charles, sign Hopkins. Now that's probably a stronger argument given that we didn't have Omenihu for a big chunk of the year and then he was fairly mediocre in the 2 losses. That said, no - we weren't winning that Denver game by adding Hopkins and subtracting Omenihu. Additionally, we won the Miami game off our defense and Omenihu was a big part of that. It's not hard to say that maybe we win the Lions and/or Eagles game but in the process give back the Dolphins game.

If we "missed" on a WR it was Jakobi Myers, who has been exceptional with the Raiders and he cost barely north of MVS's contract. That's all in hindsight though

Eh, not really.

I think a lot of people saw the Myers deal and thought "Man, that's a really good deal for the Raiders..."

The Pats just ****ed that up something awful.

They let their #1 WR from a SB winner go with no replacement and instead went shopping for defensive depth and nice to haves.

Trusting Skyy Moore to "develop" was dumb. You hope for the best but you don't trust children to lead you when you are a SB favorite/contender.

Dhop was a value signing that should have been done and if not they should have traded for help at the deadline.

Veach just mismanaged this badly.

When they wanted young corners last year to step up they already had Sneed. The WR room had an overpaid decoy in MVS.

Let's also remember the extraordinary amount of hindsight necessary.

And not just the 'well you have to use hindsight to see this years WR corps would suck' but rather 'you didn't know Hopkins would be a FA during the initial wave of free agency...'

By the time the Cardinals had cut Hopkins, the money had been spent. We'd signed Omenihu, drafted Rice, signed Smith. I absolutely believe that the Chiefs intended to sign Hopkins with money freed up from a Jones extension - didn't happen that way.

You play the cards you have as you have them. You go out there and say "Nah, I'm going to slow-play the DL and the OT position just in case Hopkins becomes available..." and all that does is discourage the Cardinals from cutting him and you may end up in a situation where you HAVE to trade for him and suddenly his agents play hardball because you gave up draft capital to get him.

There was simply no way to ever know that Hopkins was going to be out there at the price point he was when those initial signings were made.

With a top defense, Mahomes, Kelce and Andy Reid we were always going to "be here".

The point is that Veach made the margin for error MUCH smaller than it had to be.

Skyy Moore is not "paying dividends" unless you are into junk stocks but we paid a premium price for him.

Rice is paying off but why should he have to see extra attention his rookie year if he had a Dhop to go with him?

Patience has nothing to do with it. SB contenders need to both develop guys and win now and the WR room here is bad and is dragging this team's peak down. There are rebuilding teams not even close to contending with better WR rooms and more young talent than we have. The only young talent here is Rice.

I've made the same argument about Hopkins over and over and over and over and over again but this thread is littered with those who ignore it. It's patently absurd to criticize Veach for focusing on other areas and not having perfect foresight to go in a different direction and eventually circle back to Hopkins when he became available.

Others have complained that we should've traded for Ridley last year despite the fact that he wasn't going to be available the entire season and we had traded for Toney a week earlier.

There's no logic, just a lot of emotion and needing to feel right with MM and others.

Whether DHop was available or not, they needed to add a vet WR that could play.

Omniscience not necessary, anyone with a few brain cells firing could see it. And DHop was talked about as a guy that could come free WAY before he was signed.

They also could have just gave Cardinals a pick and secured him. Even if they wanted to wait till he was released they had options.

Simply convert 15 million of Mahomes roster bonus into a war chest and have it ready for him OR someone else at the trade deadline. Not being ready to sign a vet WR when they had nothing but MVS paid was poor planning and roster management.

Having a dependable target opposite Kelce to take pressure off was more important than signing a 3rd pass rusher or backup defensive players.
