The only real improvement is going to occur if the guys counted on to step up this year, actually do. Oh, and maybe they might throw to Rice more. Which is a good thing.

Did someone really think he was gonna go and throw the young receivers under the bus and say otherwise?

Arguably even with all the picks we've thrown at defense we still have big decisions to make on guys like Willie gay, CJ, danna, etc....

I still think the goal for this defense is ultimately to be great but maybe more on the edge of elite than actually elite. While they're elite it's awesome to have. Let's ride the hell out of it. But is that sustainable? I dunno. I do feel like the offense, on the other hand, is really easy to sustain and requires a way lower investment to make us elite. All the more reason to always ensure the offense is set for years to come.
It's certainly not easier to keep an elite offense than defense. It's equally difficult, as we've seen.

But....we've kept an elite offense for the entirety of Pat's tenure here.

Defense varies year to year.

I feel like it’s easier to gameplan around weaknesses on an offense as long as you have a good gameplan and are strong enough elsewhere. We made it from 2018-2020 (until both Fisher and Schwartz went down) with IMO a below average interior OL and runningbacks and still had arguably the best offense in the league every year.

It seems like the defense has to be at a minimum above average at every position to be a great defense, any particular weakness can be exploited by offenses.

Having said that, there are teams like Baltimore who have had a lot of turnover on defense and keep on churning.

I was flamed around preseason for saying the issue with this team is speed at skill positions.

Wait a minute haven't you been ranting for months about how we had a prolific offense without any semblance of talent? This is despite as of last year investing pocket change for WRs, intentionally leaving a giant hole at RT, and walking into last season with a 7th round pick to fix our holes in the running game.

How can you say it's been nearly the same when we've been pumping blue chip draft picks and trade ups for defense for 5 years. And even still every year prior to this people have complained about our defense. It's really hard to build a defense and much as I love spags he is way less reliable building a consistently dominant defense as Reid. CJ is a playmaker but he's nowhere near the difference maker as mahomes. We probably need a lot of talent and depth to consistently cook on defense. This year we have both. Is that sustainable? Not nearly as much as offense

I think most people agree that with mahomes we don't need Justin Jefferson or Trent Williams. We need competent talent and if we out a fraction of the attention on offense as we've done for defense we would have elite talent on offense too. Before anyone twists my words that isn't to say we shouldn't build a great defense. But we set a low bar for how much talent mahomes and Reid need to cook, and we haven't hit that this year as of yet. We aren't excelling on offense because we haven't tried very hard to hit a low bar, not because it is extraordinarily hard.
