Let's talk about the Miami Dolphins

Here is my $500,000 question on this game.

Will Spags and Co play it straight and keep their powder dry for the playoffs?

Last season the Chiefs defense (and maybe Andy, don't recall) kept things very vanilla when they went to Cincy.

They lost that battle, but won the war, because the defensive wrinkles Spags wanted to use against the Bengals were unveiled in the AFC Championship and held their offense at bay just enough for gimpy Mahomes to drag us over the finish line late.

Will Spags come into this game guns blazing and try to take out the Dolphins early this season? OR will he keep his cards hidden for the real season?

It's entirely possible that the Chiefs lose on Sunday. It's also possible the the D finally gives up 30+.

I'm just amazed that people think you have to shut down elite offenses to prove you're a great defense. Elite offense beats elite defense most of the time in the modern NFL.

We got some TRUE ****ing pussies on this board. This defense is LETHAL.

Really? 4 "excellent offenses," eh? The best offense we've played was in Week 1, DET scoring 25 points/game (avg). Most metrics sites have DET ranked around 8th or 9th offensively. Then LAC right behind them, or two slots back. JAX is usually next in line at about 11th or 12th. MIN is league average offensively. Everyone else we've played is worse than average, with both CHI and NYJ bringing up the rear, in the bottom 5 offenses.

Now, i personally believe that the Chiefs defense is really good. but the fact remains that they haven't played the best offenses yet, they haven't played a good offense in some time, and that the best offense they played barely cracks the top-10.*

It is what it is. This week they play the highest scoring offense in the NFL. Their first real test in over a month. We'll know then if they deserve to be ranked as high as 2nd shortly.

What happens if they play a great offense like the Dolphins and they score 30?

"OMG they were frauds!"

Did you do this when the Eagles elite defense couldn't stop the Chiefs in the SB?

Is the Cowboys defense fraudulent becuase the 49ers dropped a 40 burger on their ass?

The Eagles have given up a combined 62 ****ing points to an offense worse than the Lions, Jags, Chargers, and Vikings.

Are the no longer one of the best defenses in the NFL?

Where's this elite defense that is shutting everybody down, including elite offenses?

It's a ridiculous talking point.

It is absurd to claim that you don't know how good a defense is until they play an elite offense. If it were just a good offense, I would understand the argument.

But if you're only judging defense based on how they play against elite offenses, then guess what....

they must all ****ing suck dick then.

...that's pretty literal. We don't have a GREAT handle on where the defense is at.

We have a pretty good handle of it... they've looked damn good.

But, we all know who the true SB contenders are and we know they haven't played any of them.

I wouldn't put the Dolphins in that category, except of course their offense will probably be a pretty good test (they've been inconsistent and not great against the two playoff teams they've played though, thus not a SB contender yet).

Lol, you need to chill. i never said anything about anyone being "frauds."

All I actually said was that "2nd-ranked defense" title comes with a bit of a qualifer, imo. I mean, this is what happens when you play the likes of Zach Wilson, Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

I'm waiting for that '85 Bears defense to get bumped after the Chiefs give up 27 to the Dolphins and people post "they ain't the '85 Bears!"

........who gave up 38 to the Dolphins.

They ran into Dan Marino in God-mode. The dude was impossible to stop when he hit one of those games where he could put it in a mailbox from 30 yards away consistently.

You've really turned into a butt****ing moron.

LAC may not be a good offense. Look at who they've played. MIA; Week 1. TEN; we know now that they aren't a good defense. MIN; not a good defense. LVR; shocker! terrible defense. DAL; good defense. KC; good defense. CHI; bad defense.

MIN has been able to rack up yards, but points have been a lot harder to come by for them, obviously, hence the 22-point scoring average, and the 4-4 record. For context, DEN is scoring 21.5 points/game in 2023. So MIN's offense is a half-point better than DEN. Whee.

And right now, we're just talking raw stats. Go look at these offense's advanced metrics to get an even better look. Just for example, MIN has a 0.6% OFF DVOA, so just a **** hair better than league average.

DEN= -0.7%

CHI= -12.5%

NYJ= -18.0%

And DEN's OFF DVOA was probably bumped up from somewhere down around where CHI is, just because they played CHI and GB in recent weeks, and managed to put 24 on KC a couple days ago.

Yeah, and that's not to really discount the Bears, it's just how it is even across eras... run into a QB who throws for 4000+ yards, he could have a pretty decent day against your otherwise great defense.

Of course, the difference these days is you run into those guys every few games, so 'great' can be holding the best offenses to ~21-24.

We're talking DVOA now?

Detroit - 6th
Chargers - 8th
Jacksonville - 12th

Yes, the Chiefs defense is legit. Proven.
