I grew up being an Oriole fan mostly because they were a good team and on TV a lot in the late 60's early 70's. He sucked at hitting but it was fun to watch him field.

I disagree with the notion that he sucked at hitting.

You can't look at him like a modern day 3B. The Mike Schmidt and George Brett generation changed the position forever.

When Mr. Impossible was playing, there was maybe two 3B in 70 years (Eddie Mathews, Ron Santo) that had the type of career slugging stats at the position that we are accustomed to now. He was a well above-average hitter for his position when you put it into context.

Yeah, historically third base was a glove position first. The amount of them in the Hall of the Fame from the pre 1970s era is shockingly tiny.

On the palm of his gamer glove he would etch “E 5”.

Saw him play several times in Municipal and Royals stadium. The O’s were just a machine in those days. The Royals, in early expansion days, lost the first 16 or so games played against the Orioles.

Man, they were just a good solid club all around.
