The answer seems pretty obvious based on his history. Maybe Rice isn't ready for said role.

Hell, Skyy has played like 22 career games - and yesterday was the 2nd time (I believe) he gained more than 50 yards.

Was he a bad pick? Is it the playbook? Can we not develop WR's?

We're in Year 2 and have no idea. Apply the same slowroll development process to Rice and Ross and sorry, but that's concerning.
We're in week 2 of year 2, and Skyy just had a nice game. Maybe we ought to give the process a chance, here.

So the other thing about WRs… if this is a complicated system that relies so much on timing and hitting your spots… with best targets thriving when they can read mahomes’ mind…

Why does it feel like we love WRs with questionable instincts and Iq? Mecole and drob never picked it up. I don’t love Mvs’ instincts. Skyy often just doesn’t feel on the same page.

Yes they added multiple young DBs that room also had Justin Reid going into his 5th year, Juan Thornhill in his 4th and Sneed entering his 3rd. It was young but they had reliable vets to help hold it together.

OL is the same story, while Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith were rookies Joe Thuney was added and the best guard in the league. OBJ like him or not was a 2 year starter that had been successful and Wylie even if you hate him had a lot of starting experience.

It was a mix and they had one stand alone player with a proven history of consistency in Reid and Thuney which is exactly what the WR room doesn't have.
They have steady vets, it's just that you don't like them.

I completely agree, and Veach knows this - which is why it seems egregious to have gone into this season without a security blanket for 15 and someone to take the heat off 87 while the kids learned.

I think it's partly just a competition cycle thing. And necessity - Kupp got hurt so Nacua was the next guy up.

I mean this is the same McVay that added OBJ mid-season. That brought in a CLEARLY gassed Allen Robinson last season. Who evidently slow-played the best WR in football for his first 2 seasons.

He's not just throwing the keys to rookies as a matter of course.
I don't disagree but at the same time what we're seeing here would be like if when Kupp went down instead of just going with Puca they decided they were gonna give those snaps to Jake Skowronek because he'd been there before.

They do?

MVS entire career is that he is consistently inconsistent while playing with 2 HOF QBs.

And Justin Watson is literally a WR 6.

That isn't what I'd call "reliable vets"

This just seems hilariously self-evident.

We're probably nearing equilibrium where we can start to even things out a bit. But we had an entire defense get old and turn to shit right about the time Mahomes took over the ship. We had to fix that and get those guys to at least average or we were gonna have a lot of years like '18 in front of us.

We managed to do so. Now some of the offense is starting to gray a bit so we'll need to adjust to THAT.

It's a balancing act every single year. But for the first several years of Veach's time here, there was nothing to balance - the offense was elite and the defense was a shit-show. That had to be addressed.
I agree with pretty much everything you posted here in this thread but I don't think this part is true. Yes, it was not a top defense. And no, it is not on the level of our offense. Still, I don't believe it was one of the worst. Doesn't mean your overall point was not valid because it was. Just no need for hyperbole. Just my .02.

Edit: Nevermind. I should have thoroughly read your entire post. I guess you meant 5 years ago? If that's the case then yeah, you're right.

In 2018 when this 'draft cycle' of leaning heavily into the defense started?

Yeah, it was. And then we focused heavily on the DL, DEs specifically, which WERE the worst booked DEs in the league because half of them was Frank Clark.

You're not just trading a 2nd rd pick to move up that high. Probably multiple 1's, multiple 2's and more for 1 player.

So you want to pay Chris Jones, tank our cap space and use our draft picks for a LT?

So...cut the team at the knees when Mahomes is entering his prime?

Drob picked it up fine, he just ran backwards and wasn't particularly physically talented. Mecole never really developed, and you'll have a hard time convincing me that he put in the effort after he just skipped Mahomes' camp. He's like WR5 in NY, too, with 4.3 speed. So whatever.

MVS? 6 for 116 in the AFCCG when we had to have it. He stepped up beyond his role.

And Skyy's two games in with an expanded role, with one zilch game and one pretty good one. So maybe it's going to be ok.

Agreed. He's not flashy but he seems to be reliable (for the most part) and like you said, he gets open.
