The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

So the logic of this thread seems to have come around to concluding is probably good for us if he holds out for eight weeks.

We should still be able to get the Super Bowl as we should end up in good shape after the first eight games. [probably.7-1 or 6-2] and have the number one seed because Buffalo and Cincinnati face much tougher competition in their division.

We are in a much better cap situation next year, whether it’s to keep other players, especially the OL, that is critical to keep Mahomes, healthy; and / or to keep franchising Jones as long as we want.

And when we think it’s a better route, we are able to tag and trade Jones without the tag being prohibitive.

So no longer any need to worry about this!

The Cardinals aren't doing that...

Your most likely moves would be teams like...Atlanta, Carolina, Chicago etc.

I get he had a few pressures and batted passes but that's not worth paying an insane contract when he's enter in his 30's

Anyway. This guy is our DL. Karlaftis had a few pressures. Dunlap had that big play. Frank was invisible and Danna wasn’t any better.

He might be the best player on this team not named Patrick Mahomes.

TL;DR pay Chris Jones his goddamn money
How do you go from calling a guy "our DL" and the best player on the team not named Mahomes to now shitting on him and acting like he only performs in contract years?

Yup. Those are the outliers and that's exactly why you keep him this year. He's gonna produce to get that contract from a team.

But the 3 years before this last year he had:

9 sacks, 8 TFL, 20 QB hits
7.5 sacks, 3 TFL, 28 QB hits
9 sacks, 8 TFL, 17 QB hits

This is what Chris is going to be fellas. Still "good" but not like last year. That's not worth a $30 million anchor for the next 4-5 years.

This is the reality

Right. Only performs in contract years is bullshit and I hope no one actually thinks that of him. But he DOES have an extra gear in his engine that he only seems to engage in contract years.

Bc the numbers show it.

History shows that the vast majority of players at his position fall off around age 30-31. I've posted that many times. Mecca has posted that many times.

The fact that you ignore that in favor of a flawed straw man is hilarious

He's a very good player that plays like an elite player when it's contract time.

If he knows this is the last time he gets paid what keeps him reaching into the elite engine? What even keeps him very good when his talent starts to fade?

Actually a ton of them saw serious decline in production in their age 29 season.

Quoting this again bc I'm pretty confident that my post you're citing as a "gotcha" was from last season.

"Pay him his money" was what the Chiefs and all of us wanted. Pay him "insane Aaron Donald money" is now what Chris apparently wants.

They aren't the same.

Veach knows this too and it’s why he’s not going to bend over the barrel for Jones. Gotta think long term about keeping some of the young core around.

He could recoup that money post career as a living legend in KC

There is a major difference in the legacy he could leave by staying here, as opposed to going to some shithole like Atlanta or some such, and spending the rest of his career on a loser
