The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

The Browns cleared salary cap space by turning Watson's cap hit up to 11 for the next 3 years; $64 million/season for the next 3 seasons. With that cap charge AND Garrett on the books, they can't afford Jones.

And they're not gonna trade for him to play for a single season, especially when a supposed unwillingness to play on his current deal has him sitting anyway.

The Browns aren't a realistic option, nor does his cap hit this year matter a ton given that he'll be traded to a team where he'll sign an extension and lower that hit anyway.

There are maybe 20 teams in the league that can realistically trade for him - the Browns don't appear to be among them.

None.

Trade him and move on.

I'm not sure he has much leverage now.

The Chiefs have told Jones they can't pay him above X dollar amount.

The Chiefs are prepared to continue on without Jones. It is what it is, and the Chiefs aren't going to change their minds.

I’ll be curious if CJ goes full Tyreek Heel after he leaves KC. Hilarious how butthurt players get these days when the Chiefs don’t just hand over the dollar amount that they think they’re worth.

The problem now is Chris has gone public in a challenging manner. The franchise simply cannot give him what he wants because of that if nothing else even if they wanted to. It sets a standard for the way they deal with negotiations. Chris right now is essentially setting the precedence of him being the highest paid over the team and even the fans who have been willing to come out of their own shallow pocket in order to help pacify him. At this point he is like a bad girlfriend that says one thing and does another. I don't think a deal is going to get done at this point. Maybe Cleveland is a place he can go and truly be happy.

I don't understand how they can be this far apart but the Chiefs FO not have had any idea before the draft. That makes no sense to me. If he was withholding how much he truly wanted before the draft, then we should have heard some trade chatter leading up to it just based on the uncertainty. If he was being honest about what he wanted, then the chiefs should have either made the decision to trade him or sign him then. There's no way they're blindsided by his demands at this point.

But we don't know what he was asking for or what he's being offered. What if Veach is doing the whole "I'm not budging on this number" thing he did with Tyreek and the number is 25-26mil and Chris KNOWS he can get 28-30 on the open market?

Jones is starting to remind me of the bratty little shit in Walmart. You know the one. He's raising hell because mommy won't buy him every toy they pass by in the store. The difference is, the Walmart brat has 100 people he's irritating, Jones has twitter and is coming across as a dumb ass, in front of millions.

I hadn't looked at them on Over the Cap... but yikes. Max restructures on Watson and Garrett and cutting Cooper gets them under the projected 2024 cap, but only barely.

They have very little flexibility as a result. Not many cap savings options beyond those three moves.

According to "overthecap" we currently have Team Cap Space: $748,038.
Chris holding out keeps us from changing that number. Essentially we don't have the money to bring in free agent DLs. He kind of has us over a barrel;

- He wont play
- We cant replace him in free agency

What am I missing here?

Or maybe Veach knows what he's doing and is planning to force Jones to play out the final year of his deal regardless of how butthurt that makes him and move on in 2024.

That’s the most logical explanation and happens with clients more than you think.

Maybe he didn’t even tell his agent how much he truly wanted.

Leave a team, a legacy like this for an extra couple million?

Thats some extremely shortsighted idiocy, if he were to retire with the Chiefs he'd have the keys to the city for life, he could basically write his own ticket and recoup way more than a couple million... business ventures, speaking gigs etc

Then we should have traded him while we could maximize his value. If he wasn't willing to step up to the table in the first place, this whole thing should have been over in March or April.
