The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

Huh? Who's hand waving it? Literally everyone here acknowledged that would make things harder. But again, he'd still be playing in the most important games even if he does hold out until mid season and if he actually is dumb enough to go that route he's doing the team a massive favor in salary cap ramifications.

So what exactly is this hand wringing about, again?

The guy who said "we'll be fine with him or without him..."

Yeah, I'd say that's hand-waiving it a bit, no?

Because without those 15 sacks and more critically, without the pressures and the double-teams, this DL is in trouble.

Y'all really don't remember how many games were nip/tuck right until the 4th quarter last year? Again, we don't beat Cincy without him. We don't beat Philly without him.

How's that not 'a game changer' if we don't have him?

This isn't just some swinging dick linebacker. This was probably the 3rd most impactful defensive player in football last season. He was THAT ****ing good.

It's really REALLY weird to me that folks are going to hand-waive that. Because as 'only one piece of the puzzle' but playing at an insanely high level, this defense was still only okay most of the season in 2022. Take him out of that equation and 'only okay' may be a pleasant memory.

Take him out and you're back to trying to outscore teams and hoping they make a mistake or you win a coin toss. That didn't work in '18 and wouldn't have worked even in '19 had the AFC not been a bucket of dicks that year.

We need the D to complement the O and Jones is the most critical component we have to that.

So I'm not gonna pretend like he doesn't matter. He does - in a big way.

But he's evidently lost his mind.
Yeah, the D would be way different if there is no Jones. I honestly think they'd have to look at using an odd-man front to try to make that work without him. Karlaftis and Omenihu are stout enough to be 34 E, but NT gets dicey if you're relying on Danny Shelton and Nnadi and Coburn.

It wouldn't spell the end of them being a Super Bowl contender, to me. They'd be one. But they'd go from being a favorite to just another team in the mix.

It's hard to believe he and his agent are far enough off the reservation to actually sit out that much of the season or the whole season. So I can't imagine that happening. It basically ended his boy Lev Bell's career (though he did get one good payday out of it, it wasn't what he was offered).

Yes, he has lost his freaking mind and I have a feeling he is getting really really bad advise from his agent. Bottom line, there is nothing we, or the team can do about it right now. The exception would be to pay him his price of 30-32M a year, or whatever his is asking for. If we do that, it would screw us for years to come. options are rather limited at this point.

Makes last season all that more amazing. He would of likely held out this season anyway. Fresh of an unlikely championship because of so many rookies. Desperation gone after winning 2 out of 3 SBs in 4 years. It's really dream come true stuff as it stands

Let's be honest here. His magnus opus was against backup OL in the Championship game. Every other game he hasn't registered a sack. He was invisible in the SB and yet we still won.

Take out his game against backups and ask yourself if that is worth $30 million a year with the strong chance he declines during the contract with us paying dead money like we are currently with Frank Clark?

It's not worth it. History has proven it. Get him back this year, make a run and then tag and trade in late February/early March before FA starts.

If you've got to break open the bank of Mahomes to pull that off, oh well. That's literally why the contract is constructed the way it is.

Yes not having Jones downgrades the D a lot I still think Spags can and would make it work. Spags has many designed formations/stunts to help get Jones free. If Jones was gone why couldn’t Spags make someone else the focus of the D to get them free?

I think it’s more likely they break that bank again - if they even can - to create transactional room for this season.

What if he's asking for a four year deal with no out?

Year 3 would most likely be a big gamble and year 4 a waste.

It actually did work in '18, without the offsides, but I get it.

I think this place makes people pretty numb to predicting bad things, probably so much so that we tend to ignore things that maybe we should think... uh, this might actually be bad.

And a large part for me is 1) number of scenarios, and 2) time.

And right now it's August and out of many different scenarios, CJ not playing for the Chiefs this year or even a large chunk of it seems like an outlier (I'm also assuming he's trolling on Twitter, so who knows, I could be wrong and maybe he is an idiot).

In the 'time' department, there's stuff like the Tyreek trade, regular season losses predicting playoff doom, etc. And with the Tyreek trade, we basically said the same thing.... they'd probably still be really good, but we may need him for that one Wasp play.

In the 'scenario' department, it's things like ending up playing the Titans in the AFCCG, not playing in Atlanta last postseason, not playing both the Bengals and Bills last postseason, etc.

Then we have stuff like 3 & 15 Wasp, :13, Mahomes being unable to walk against Jax, 1-leg Mahomes vs the Bengals.... shit that's staring you in the face with very little in terms of possible ways out, and they still somehow figure it out.

I'm personally pretty much dismissing the notion he won't be on the field this season until it plays out, and I'll start to question it if nothing happens soon after the final preseason game. Right now, meh.

And while I'm not personally dismissing his impact and the thought that yeah, maybe this time I really should be worried.... even if he got traded tomorrow and it's suddenly staring us in the face, it's still only August and a lot of shit could happen. And we obviously don't WANT to rely on maybe the Bills take a step back or maybe they luck out in several scenarios in the playoffs, etc; etc.... but, that's kind of where my mind goes.

Worry about what's staring you in the face and could destroy you within 13 seconds, that's the current precedent they've set.

I originally thought a tag and trade was a good idea. I'm just not sure what other teams will think he's worth at that age and cost though.
