The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

I would think that if he holds out into the season, that would affect the tag next year, right? If he foregoes getting paid for multiple weeks, then not only would it lower his pay for this season, that would lower the 120% amount right? If he misses 7 games, for example, then his cap number for this season would drop to $20M so his tag number should be $24M, 120% of his 2023 number. That should be enough to end the holdout, because it could, in theory, cost him more than just game checks this year.

You obviously didn't read your own link. The above was quoted directly from it.
I apologize for my confusion, I read it but not thoroughly evidently.

They include the prorated signing bonus in the amount to use to figure the tag number. It's posted a couple of times in this thread. So, the number they use is $27.1M

I thought that was his “cap hit”. I didn’t know that they included that when they calculated the franchise tag. Won’t make that mistake again.

That's fine. Better than a long term contract. You just MUST MUST make sure you have Chris Jones for the next two years while our window with Kelce is active.

I was looking at the Bleacher Report grades of our 2016 draft class. Pretty hilarious. Nobody knows a damn thing.

Chris Jones got a B-. "Why draft him when Jarran Reed and A'Shawn Robinson are better prospects and were still there?"

Really good laugh all the way through. Here are the rest of the player grades.

KeiVarae Russell, CB: B-
Parker Ehinger, OL: C-
Eric Murray, DB: B+
DeMarcus Robinson, WR: C
Kevin Hogan, QB: A+
Tyreek Hill, RB: D (tough for him to crack the roster as anything more than a 4th string RB or kick return specialist!)
DJ White, CB: B-
Dadi Nicolas: B-

Veach can say whatever but he will trade Jones or we get nothing for him. He is losing like 500k and then he caves for less money than he wants? I doubt it. Before deadline he's probably gone.

The Bears probably the only team that could make a decent trade offer and have the salary cap room to make a play for Jones. They have an extra 1st round pick in 2024 and an extra 2nd round pick in 2025. They gave up a 2nd round pick for Steelers WR Claypool last year, that shows they want to win sooner than later, even though Claypool was probably only worth a 4th round pick at best.

Great point, does anyone know if it works this way? Makes perfect sense that it would.

Hm if the tag is ~120% of the average of the top of 5 at the position, would Chris losing game checks make that much of a difference?

Think it’s top 5 at position OR 120% of his own cap hit, which ever is greater.
