The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

1). Donald at $31.66M

2). Q. Williams at $24M
3). Simmons at $23.5M
4). Payne at $22.5M
5). Lawrence at $22.5M
6). Hargrave at $21M
7). L. Williams at $21M
8). Buckner at $21M
9). Chris Jones at $20M

Looks like the “norm” is elite guys that resets the DT market raise the average by $500k. With that in mind Jones should be a new contract worth $24.5M average. Donald’s $31.66M shouldn’t even be looked at.

Even if Veach wanted to award Jones and go beyond that $500K increase a $25M average should be good for both sides with the ONLY thing in discussion should be 3 year or 4 year extension.

Asking for $30M+ is ridiculous and Veach should trade his ass.
That's not the way it works. Guys get contracts and people use that contract all the time. Also to act like those guys are anywhere near Chris Jones level is hilarious. Yeah Donald is a top 5 defensive player of all time, but that doesn't mean no one can come close to his deal.

Williams at $24M - 1x 1st team AP
Simmons at $23.5M - 2x 2nd team AP
Payne at $22.5M - made a pro bowl
Lawrence at $22.5M - made a pro bowl
Hargrave at $21M - made a pro bowl
L. Williams at $21M - made a pro bowl
Buckner at $21M - 1x 1st team AP, 1x 2nd team AP

Now Chris Jones
2x SB champ, 1x 1st team AP, 3x 2nd team AP, DPOTY finalist

Two of those 2nd team All-Pros could easily be 1st team.

Just because those dumb shits are one upping each other by $500k a year doesn't mean Chris Jones should. Yeah he's not on Aaron Donald's level, but those other guys aren't on Jones' level.

What the hell do you mean “ that’s not how things work”? It’s EXACTLY how things work in the NFL and the Rams giving Donald that contract is an outlier. Hell I’d say it’s worse than the reaction people had when the Browns gave Watson that guaranteed contract….has it happened since? NO because that’s not how contracts work in the NFL.

We can all agree that Jones is the best DT in the NFL and he should be the highest paid at his position based on the market and NFL history on how that works is Jones should get $24.5M avg annual salary.

Players that are best at there position don’t historically get almost $10M more than the current highest player…..they wait the offseason out, see what everyone else gets paid first and then sign for just a little more than that current highest paid player.

So half way between Williams and Donald? $27.25 Million? That would put a significant gap between CJ and the rest of the field, while also not being in the outlier region of Donald's deal..

I think Chris Jones will miss the first pre-season game and maybe the 3rd but Vranch won't blink and Jones is losing money daily so i think he will show up for the third pre-season and play under contract he already has. Chiefs may tag him next year and possibly try to trade him. We need him this year but next year Vroop will make some moves or draft DT

I wish I had just 1/10th of their stupidity... The amount of money these guys make for putting their bodies on the line is as easy to wrap my little brain around as the idea of traveling to the nearest star (other than the sun).

Jones will have to play this season, he really has no other option so this is really a problem for next year. Relax we will have him back before the season starts.

I guess my main concern is him saying his back is hurt or something like that. I mean sure it would NOT help his market for next year, but still have a small fear of that.

He'll turn 30 next offseason. If he doesn't play and play very well this season he won't be offered anything close to what we're likely offering him right now. He'll be looking at offers around $25M/yr.

The Chiefs have most of the leverage here. The Tyreek situation has shown that they won't be forced into making deals they don't want to make.

I think deep down he loves the Chiefs and he loves his teammates. When it's time to go he'll go. He's been through many training camps already - he knows what it takes to be ready for the season. He's just trying to get his cash. When that is decided (in whatever way, positive or negative) I'm confident he'll still give 100%

I'm confident he'll give 100% too, but training camp is important in certain aspects to get guys back into football shape.

Not really. The unforgivable daily $50K fines generally mean that somebody who is under contract will now hold "in". Jones is going to have $1M+ in fines whether an extension is reached or not. Could have the same extension without losing all that money if he was holding in. And he doesn't have a ton of leverage since he'd be forfeiting $23M to sit out the season. I don't understand what he or Bosa are doing, but the days of "hold out, and fines will all be forgiven in the end" are over.
