Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

Christian Watson had some tds but I’m still a bit meh on him.

The young guys need to play if you wanna maximize those rookie contracts everyone loves so much.

His second half was pretty great. That's fairly hard to argue.

But your greater point is the whole thing. If you're paying an elite QB you have to maximize value at other position groups.

If they wanna pay an elite wr, I’m fine with it. But if that’s what they wanna do, it needs to be an actual elite young wr

Well, don't keep us in suspense, which elite young WR, and available for less than DHop, do you have in mind?

As for 'not ready', yeah, well, I offer (once again!) the case of Christian Watson, who was clearly 'not ready' early in the season but season's end was a TD machine. Man, he was terrible early on, but when it clicked for him, it clicked big time. Now GB has a stud. Skyy had 4 veteran WR's in front of him. Highly unlikely ANY rookie is going to grasp this offense well enough to outperform the veterans right out of the gate. In year two? Sure. I bet he does great.

This WR room is not 'thin' on anything but proven production. Not in skillsets, not in talent, not in potential. Some of these guys are going to be very good, and some will probably disappoint, but there are enough of them in the mix to be pretty confident that we'll be fine. And 'fine' by Mahomes/Reid/Veach standards means AFCCG's at a minimum.

The 'band-aid' WR's, by the way, are already in place with James and Watson. Those are your insurance policies.

It's going to be fine.
Watson and James are there to insure the back of the roster, not the front. There is enough potential in the WR room but there is also a LOT of risk. We don't know if toney can last a full season or regularly take high snap counts. When he's not on the field it's possible we have a WR3 at best as our WR1. And that's not the kind of experiment I want to be running while we still have a dominant kelce.

I generally like where we're heading with our wr room. But it is raw and uncertain as hell. And we don't have to throw these guys to the wolves to learn about and deveiop them. you seem convinced that a WR1 even if we got him for free is some kind of Boogeyman. As if we're not gonna find snaps for skyy or rashee. As if our offense approach completely regresses back to the one bad half of football we played against Cincy with Tyreek. And you seem to "oh well" if it doesn't work out. Because reid and mahomes can make it work. While theres some truth to it it shouldn't be our crutch. I don't get the "let mahomes make lemonade" stuff. One day we'll have talent in our WR room again (maybe we already have it on our roster) and my guess is people will not want to return back to the days where we thought efficiency was our ceiling.

Veach has stocked the WR room with a lot of high ceiling options (KT, Skyy, Rice, and maaaaybe Justyn Ross).

We can always trade for a low floor vet to further solidify the position in the unlikely event they all bust.

The guys trying to create a 2018 FFL super team are ****ing exhausting.

Who's trying to create a 2018 superteam? I think the goal should be a decent enough WR1 (being realistic about our resources to find one) and a complete WR room (unlike the meh weve had anytime Sammy Watkins wasn't on the field). Think most would be cool with your approach

I'm totally done worrying about our receivers

We have a small army of guys with a wide range of skillsets for Mahomes to throw to now, this last championship was proof of concept for not needing a bona fide #1 target hog

I'm just describing what is happening, and why. It's happening. This is the plan, and Veach and Reid have been saying so all along. You and others here have been telling me I'm nuts, and it couldn't possibly be so, but here we are.

Hopkins is not coming. They're not paying market value for any proven number one type receiver. They're growing their own. They told us they were, and you can choose not to believe it, even now, if you want but it's happening.

Veach and Reid planned to have Tyreek until he pulled the wool over our eyes in the 25th hour. They planned to pay Tyreek and juju even on top of mahomes' contract. They tried to trade for AJ brown but got outbid. So far this year, they have not responded to a bad WR market. Which includes DHop who I have plenty of reservations about too. What they've shown is they won't panic. But they've shown that there's plenty of interest in pursuing a WR1.

That's one interpretation. The other is that they have young players with intriguing talent that they can develop instead. They said so in February. Everything they've done in the past 12 months shows they've moved to development in the WR room.

If they'd paid Tyreek, we'd be watching Jones in a different uniform uniform.

I'd rather go young with upside at WR and field a nasty defense than have every game be a shootout.

Apparently, so would the Chiefs.

Um, not really an 'interpretation.' Veach literally said he was all-in on keeping Tyreek. He just didn't anticipate the WR market doing what it did.

Also, I don't get how you think Jones would be playing in a different uni, considering that Veach said out loud several times that he was also going to make every effort to keep CJ as well, even after signing Tyreek.

He literally announced to the NFL world that he had plans to keep both Tyreek and Jones, AND sign a guy like AJ Brown.

That's not my interpretation; it's exactly what he said, and literally what he tried to do.

I don't think anyone here disputes that. Just because we don't need a WR of that calibre doesn't mean it wouldn't be a big benefit to actually have one. There are people who seem to think having a WR1 is a step backwards or that our offense with Tyreek is proof that it doesn't work. And all of that is a bit homerist.
