Do we want DeHop?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl...9536dcd3&ei=21

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

Do we want a high priced prima donna?

In my opinion the Chiefs should get all the good players for league minimum. I can't comprehend how they would want to sign anywhere but here for the rest of their careers.

What Veach should do is switch all their positions to punter once they are free agents, and then sign them for nothing and then move them back to their natural positions once they are on the roster. I used to do it in Madden all the time and the other teams never even caught on. It was sweet!

Yup, I'm not even sure I have a strong preference between the two. I think Hopkins is clearly the superior player but the compensation/capital needed to get him probably makes it a toss up.

I'm just confident Veach's master plan isn't to go into next season with Toney, Moore, and MVS comprising the entire core of the group. So whatever. Just gonna have to be patient.

I don't think we'll get either. Odell will wait till some shitty team ponies up and Nuk is too much money unless he we can renegotiate and his extend his deal.

I think we'll draft a wideout in the first couple of days of draft, and bring back Watson and guys like that until post june 1 cuts or training camp.

Hopkins isn't too much money.

They could easily fit his current cap hit in.

I'm warming to the idea if Hopkins can restructure his deal in a way that gives us adequate flexibility in 2023 to offer him an extension into '24 (with a makeable out in '25).

But remember that we have a fair number of guys who get raises next season (Taylor being the obvious one, then Gay and Sneed if we want to retain them) so there's going to be some cap pressure again next year.

Of the two, I'd rather have OBJ because I think he threatens more areas of the field than Hopkins does. I said it when Hopkins was in Houston and a true superstar - he's just not someone I truly feared. He's a premier possession receiver but that has its limits. And he wasn't someone who got better with better QB play, nor did he really move the needle a ton for Houston. They were actually at their best when Fuller was healthy.

But Brett '**** around and find out' Veach doesn't seem like someone that's going to sit idly by and wait for OBJ to get his house in order. Maybe the Chiefs can leverage these trade talks into getting OBJ into gear and making up his mind.

But if not and we get Hopkins on a palatable 3 year deal for a late 2 and maybe get a 5th in the exchange, I can handle that.

My thing is...put him here with Pat and Andy and you've got your traditional Z WR no? I mean, talk about a guy that can take some pressure off Kelce.

I just think he'd really round out the core. I'd rather have OBJ, but I think the OBJ of 2023 is gonna be different than the 21 OBJ

I'm not so sure that Gay is in their plans anymore.

And I don't think it would take a 2nd to get Hopkins either. I think a 3rd and a late round pick could get it done.

If you could tell me that we were guaranteed to get the OBJ that helped the Rams win the Super Bowl? Then I'd be in on him but those injuries are just hard to ignore.

But there will be several teams willing to give a 3, IMO. And we'll be at the back of that line with the least valuable 3.

So I think the Chiefs would need to pony up the 2. And to close the gap between the late 2 we're giving up vs. the mid-3 that most other teams would be giving up, we'll want a pick back in the deal. Since the Cardinals are drafting pretty high, our late 2 for their early 4 isn't much of a value added proposition for them so it would likely need to be a 5.

Or maybe we go with a late 2 and late 5 for Hop and an early 4.

I dunno - there are parts that can move around, but remember that we lose any ties by virtue of our draft position so we'll have to view this as surrendering a round 'ahead' of what the standard value is likely to be.
