Do we want DeHop?

Story by Andrew Gould

The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

He's going to be 31 and that's not even my biggest concern. He's become quite injury prone. Lost 3 games in 2021 due to a hamstring, then played 2 games before he tore his MCL. 2022 he's suspended the first 6 games and is only able to play 9 games before what do you know, he strains the same knee he ****ed up. Being 31 doesn't help either. I'd rather make the picks and not worry about this dude hurting himself. I

f we're gonna go with an old broke dick I'd rather get Odell Beckham Jr. He doesn't cost a draft pick and isn't going to cost near what Hopkins is going to cost.
This is what I really just don't get at all.

Why on Earth would you pay top dawg money for a WR that hasn't played a game in over a year? you have no idea whether he can play a single down right now.

I mean, when I buy a truck, and up until last year i bought them all used. All 5 of them. And one thing for sure, I drive the ****ing thing first before I even think about wanting to buy it. I am not dropping actual money on a daily truck without knowing it will start, run down the street, go down the highway for a piece, up a hill, down a dirt road. Then I think about whether I'm buying.

And for certain I'm not buying a truck from the former owner when he tells me, "hey, the tranny went bad on it two years ago, but I had it repaired, and it should drive fine. I personally haven't taken it out for an actual drive, just up and down the driveway, but I'm pretty sure it'll go down the road okay."

Dhop has been largely healthy outside of what? Two injuries? Not the same injury twice (seems i know a WR that did exactly that?), but two different injuries? So, I know DHop will be available week 1. I'm at least 90% certain of it. And I saw him play at a high level just a couple months ago.

Will OBJ? Has anyone seen him even run full speed in over a year? Run a route? Jump? And the fool wants like $20M just so someone can find out if he might be able to play?

Nope. I'm all the way out on that.

Well, yeah. We obviously can't throw a Brinks truck at him. That'd be stupid. Not even feasible, i think.

I don't know what he'll demand. i saw the look in his eyes back in week 14-15?

He is all the way frustrated with Murray and/or losing. It's really the only reason I think the whole idea of him coming to KC has any wheels at all. He's pretty smart. he knows his window has shrunk to just a few years before he noticeably declines. If he's going to get a Ring, it has to be in the next 3- 4 years. That's the crossroads, and he knows it. Go after a Ring right now, or collect the money and teach young/unpolished QBs how to play the game. Those are his options.

i think (and no I have no actual evidence other than what i saw in his eyes after that game) he's tired of playing nursemaid to ungrateful/under-achieving QBs/teams and wants to start winning again, maybe chase a ring.

It gets better.

Randy Moss.

Any way, so because Randy Moss, a generational talent was traded to the Patriots when he was 30 means trading for DHop is...?

For giggles on the HOFm #'s from earlier.

Randy Moss - 150.12 . Just a mere 2nd all time for WR's.
DeAndre Hopkins - 59.84 . A close 50 spots behind Randy.

I think Easy 6 was talking about demands other than money. Tyreek was demanding the ball too much. Pretty good chance Hopkins has a similar mentality. Big name receivers are not known for humility.

He lost a big chunk of the 2021 season to his first serious injury, and this season was a suspension.

But every season before that for 5+ season he went over 1,000 yds, over 12yds/reception, over 100 catches/season, around 9-10 TDs/season . . . close to 70% catch rate?

And I watched him play since coming to AZ, because I live here, so guess what I get to watch a lot of? And in 2022, I went to a pair of games, so I saw him when he first came back, and then a couple months later. There's no drop-off. Maaaaybe he's a half-step slower. Maybe.

Give him a top-12 QB and an OC worth his weight in Kit Kat bars, and DHop would be rolling off 1,100yd/seasons just like he was a couple years ago. JFC, he just reeled off 717 yds, 11.2yds/cth, 64 rcpts, 80yds/gm, with a 67% catch rate with four different QBs, not one of which ranked higher than 19th in QBR/PRTG. Basically the proverbial bottom of the barrel as far as QBs go.

2+ seasons, he'd be around/close to 14,000 yds, over 85+ TDs.

Another couple seasons, maybe he's over 15,000/100TDs?

Sounds like HOF numbers to me.
No one but you brought up anything of him being in the HOF in 6-10 years. he better get choppin, he has a ways to go.

It doesn't matter any way. DHop is not going to be here next year, or any year after that. So considering that, I highly doubt he even sniffs the HOF process in 2 decades at least.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Veach is bad or anything. I'm just saying that the last couple of years are statisical outliers right now. He's had some bad picks. His AVERAGE year is not going to be hitting on 6 of 8 picks or stuff like that.

Again, the good thing is that Veach isn't locked in to any one strategy. The year we traded a first for OBJ, we got Bolton and Creed. It's possible to do both and WIN both.
Are they statistical outliers or a trend line? I'm leaning toward the latter while you seem to suggest the former.

Lolz, not sure why you're stuck on this HOF thing. not even the point of the thread. Not even close to the points I've been making in this thread.

But if he plays another 5 years, he probably gets in. That'd get him to about 15,800 yds, 110 TDs . . . Whether he's a 1st ballot guy, idk, but five more years of just average of his last five, and he's probably in at some point.

So you’re of the opinion that they’re going to continue to churn 4-6/7 starters, not just roster additions but starters, out of every draft?

Hmm. Anything is possible. I just haven't seen the 'diva' in him that needs to catch every ball. He doesn't even appear to like being famous or the center of attention. He likes to show off, but what top player doesn't.

I've seen him get ticked off when the play goes badly and when they don't win. I think he'd be happy to win consistently.

But who knows? I'm not in his inner circle, so i can't say with any surety.
