Car-nal Desires: Round 1, Heat 5

We have 84 entries in the tournament, and we'll collectively narrow the list down to the one Chiefsplanet dream car.

PICK TWO FROM EACH LIST ON THE POLL.

1970 Chevelle SS (The red one in this picture, not the gray one which is a separate entry.) https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/show...6&postcount=64

1957 modified Chevy Bel Air https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/show...&postcount=102

67 L88 (427) Corvette Convertible https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/show...1&postcount=11

Audi RS e-tron GT https://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/show...93&postcount=5

Recall the rules below. (Rule #5 was modified slightly from the nomination thread.)

1. This vehicle will be yours at no purchase cost.
2. You will keep your current vehicles, so no need to worry about fitting a baby seat in it or being able to haul mulch.
3. You're responsible for parking it.
4. You pay for gas or electricity.
5. Insurance and maintenance up to $3,000 per month is free to you. You cover the next $1,000 if the expenses are higher, and then after that the expenses are covered. So for a high-end vehicle you'll cover a max of $1,000 per month.
6. The vehicle must be street-legal.
7. The vehicle must actually exist. It cannot be a cartoon or concept drawing. However, it can be a production vehicle, a concept vehicle, a custom vehicle, or anything else that is real.
8. The vehicle being nominated is the exact vehicle shown. You cannot change the color, the interior, the engine size, etc.
9. You cannot use the vehicle to make money. It's only for your personal use.
10. You cannot sell the vehicle.
11. Any type of street-legal vehicle is allowed. You can nominate a car, a truck, a minivan, an RV, a semi-truck, a motorcyle, a classic car, a school bus, whatever. As long as it meets the rules above, it's eligible.

Corvette and Chevelle for me. And I do agree with that post, has to be a 1970 on the Chevelle.

Meanwhile that Audi is going to suck your budget right up. Anything goes wrong on it and you're taking loans out of your monthly allowance.
Yeah, but the Audi's not going to break down very often, either. It's modern so it'll require less maintenance and it's electric, which means fewer things to break.

I'm curious now whether the Vette or the Audi would have more maintenance costs over ten years of ownership. I could make an argument that the Audi would be cheaper.

Idk, that Vette is pretty basic. Parts are cheap as it gets, and there really isn't much to break in that Vette either. Mechanically speaking, Classic cars are pretty damn cheap to maintain, even when things do break. And a basic mechanic can work on it too.

Surely that Audi requires specialized Audi mechanics.

Sorry if this has been covered already, but if we are voting for two does that mean two are advancing from each heat?

The vette is bare bones basic engineering - if built well, it shouldn't ever break down either.

The Audi has multiple points of failure that if/when they break (electronics seem to have nasty failure rates) are going to require specialized service to repair.

The Vette - shit, most of the stuff that breaks on it you can repair yourself with a youtube video, a floor jack and a nice mechanics tool set.

Yep. The top two advance. I figured it would minimize the odds of juggernauts or duds facing each other immediately, and 21 heats in the first round seems easier than 42 heats.

I'll likely switch it up in the next round since we'll have 42 competitors still standing.

I own no tools, no floor jack, and for all practical purposes, no thumbs.

I can use youtube, so I've got that going for me. However, it's mostly for cat videos and Chiefs highlight films.

Having done a frame-up resto on a '64 vette I can attest that this is 99% true.
The 1% has to do with the independent rear suspension bearing service that you're better off taking to a 'vette mechanic to do. Those things are a booger to get setup .

Yup.

The '67 427/435 w/ the side-pipes is pretty much the apex of American performance cars.

When the economy shit the bed in '08 you could find one of those for about $30K and I could've covered most of that by selling the Camaro. The wife flat doesn't like them. Thinks that Stingray is ugly.

She's just wrong as hell.

And that's pretty much a 6 figure car if it has 4 tires and a steering wheel these days.

Ugh...still chaps my ass.

I hear ya.....even earlier than '08 I had an opportunity to buy 427/435 coupe for $36K and passed on it as it needed a bunch of work. Kicking myself in the ass these days for not buying it.
