Interesting takes on Jalen Mayfield

Lance Zierlein and Dane Brugler, two guys known for their ability to evaluate OL prospects, were talking with a guy that is also supposedly an OL expert and none of these guys were big on Mayfield at T.

I found this very interesting.

They seem to think he’s a G. Although they did say he’s really young so maybe he can play T with more development/growth.

They don’t think the NFL will view him the same as the draft community.

I don't see Mayfield as a guard. There are some footwork issues that need to be cleaned up but I see him as a better than average pass-pro tackle.

Reminds me a bit of Bulaga.

Once the top 4 guys go you can debate all kinds of things.

I think Eichenberg is more of a guard than a tackle.

I don't think Mayfield would ever be a LT in this offense. Not sure he's got that kind of skill set.

I think he's at least a RT for sure. Probably could play LT in a pinch but not ideal.

I don't know that I'd call Dane Brugler an expert. He's a draftnik with far less credentials than most. Brugler has never played a down of football in his life. You read that correctly. Never played high school much less college football. He wants to be Mel Kiper 2.0, and he's certainly making his way to doing just that but like Mel he often comes with some interesting takes.

At least Zeurlein had a chance to learn from his father who coached at every level.

All that said, I certainly could see an argument that Mayfield is not a LT. To peg Mayfield as not a tackle at all? I'd say foolish. He has the requisite length and footwork to be a solid RT in the league. He's alot like Taylor Moton coming out yet everyone is now gushing about him.

1. I didn’t call him an expert. I’m just saying these guys’ strength in evaluating is OL.

2. You don’t need to play football to evaluate talent, but I get your point.

3. Zierlein is a great OL evaluator and he respects the hell out of Brugler’s ability to evaluate OL as well. I just take his word for it.

4. They didn’t say he’s not a T at all. They said he’s a young guy that can grow into the position, but they think he’s an NFL G today.

I respect Brugler because he puts the work in. He isn't just regurgitating other people's work. Now he didn't play football, who cares.

Just because you played doesn't make you a scout.

Now on Mayfield, I like him as well. Would certainly be worth taking end of the 1st for us.

You guys make good points but playing the game carries a lot of credence with me.

I think, in terms of understanding of assignments, you're going to lack if you haven't had to execute them. And movement as it actually translates on the field, or what good movement entails on the field, is much more difficult to evaluate if you haven't done them yourself. Call me old-fashioned?

Sure, you can be a scout without playing the game but I don't think you'd be a very good one. I can't fathom myself trying to scout baseball. I never played baseball, at least not at a level you'd call competitive. I wouldn't know the nuances of how to pitch and what makes a good pitcher. I'd be looking at how many strikes he gets versus balls. Does that make him a great pro pitching prospect? Nor would I know what a good swing is versus a bad one. I'd be making hey on looking at the guy and really only knowing if he makes contact consistently or not. Does that make him a good pro hitter? I might guess well enough based on results to be 50/50, but that doesn't make me a good scout.

Anyhow, enough on that. It's relatively minor. You're right in that Brugler has put in alot of hours looking at tape and he's far from terrible. He's chosen a demanding career path, and I'll commend him for that. I just couldn't stand on his opinion on a prospect alone.

I will say this, this isn't the first place I've read that Mayfield may need to move inside to guard. He just may be a guy like Scherff that couldn't quite live up to being a tackle and will be an outstanding guard but I can't fathom a team not wanting to put him at tackle first and move him inside only if he fails. I think there are some concerns out there that echo that with a few other prospects, one being a much more highly touted player in Slater.

Yep. A lot of guys think Slater lacks the radius to play outside in the NFL.
