Is Charvarius Ward a #1 corner?

[PFF KC Chiefs] Charvarious Ward ranks #1 in Passer Rating allowed and Reception %. He ranks #3 in Yards Allowed and tied for 3rd in Yards/Coverage Snap
There were 10 cornerbacks to reach 1,000 total snaps in the 2019 regular season. Charvarius Ward was one.

• Passer Rating: 67.3 (1st)
• Yards Allowed: 634 (3rd)
• Reception %: 47.6% (1st)
• Yards/Coverage snap: 1.00 (T-3rd)

i think he is on his way but needs one more lock down season.

Aw geez, gonna go out on a limb here and say yes. A whole lot of trust was put on the back end of our defense, particularly the corner position and he delivered. Yes the moment front half of the defense had a lot to do with it but he was great in run support and I dunno he was pretty ****ing good.

Not based on what he's done up to this point. But he's been an incredibly efficient pick up who's young and talented and could still be a #1 with experience. Shit, even if he turns into a dependable #2 it will be more than worth what we traded for considering the position.

He's a 6-1" corner that runs a 4.4 Forty. He's a solid #2 at worst with some physical upside to be a solid #1.

No. That was Fenton. We've talked about this, dude. Chiefs were pattern matching on that play (a late game Saban special) Ward's responsibility on that play was to get the receiver on the inside towards Fuller. Fuller was responsible for the deep post coverage on Sanders and Fenton was responsible for Bourne. Fenton DID NOT cover Bourne, leaving Bourne wide open in the middle. This forced Fuller to do a literal 180 so that Bourne was covered by someone on the field. Since Fuller was no longer covering the deep post, Ward pushing Sanders inside pushed him towards an opening created by Fenton - who Sanders was able to outrun on that play.

Yeah - you don't need all-world corners. Just guys who are consistent and can do their job.

He was a starting CB on a super-bowl winning team. It's really hard to argue that he's not that good, since he is wearing a RING.

This is the same as that old "Is X pitcher an ace" discussion.

Is Charvarius Ward one of the top 32 corners in the league? Yeah, I think that's a fair statement to make. So if everyone was evenly distributed, he'd be the best starting CB on some team somewhere in the CB ranking.

But that's not exactly how I see things on Aces or #1 CBs. If I'm going to game 7 of the WS and I have Madison Bumgarner I've got an absolute badass on the bump and I'm confident that my guy will have a great start and drag us through. But the Royals in 14 acquired Volquez mid-season and he had the best pedigree. Ventura the most talent and Chris Young may have had the most productive season beginning to end. They had a 'best pitcher' by a lot of different definitions but lacked an actual 'ace'.

So is Ward a #1 corner in a 'shut down CB' sense? No. But in a pure meritocracy would he be the best CB somewhere? Yeah, I think he would be.

When extending the range down to 800 snaps Ward’s numbers are still pretty stellar.

Off topic but I didn't know we signed Lavert Hill as an UDFA. He was supposed to be pretty good coming out of Michigan I thought. Definitely someone to keep your eye on.
