Cutting the cable, looking for some advice.

The Mrs and I have decided to take the leap and cut off cable TV and start streaming. Along with vudu, prime video, Pluto tv and a couple other free streaming apps, I want to get an outdoor HD antenna for local channels.

My main questions for anyone who has done this are, what should I look for in an HD antenna (brand, range etc.) and of Hulu, sling, which one would give me the most similar channels to cable.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I gave up. Xfinity lowered my bill by 50%( $300 to $150)? 2 year deal.
I can cancel if I pay them 2 months ($300).
They are the only provider that can get me over 100mbps and adding TV to the internet service is $50.00 per month
And bonus we get a land line we do not use
I have NFL Sunday ticket stream using my kids college info thru att ($100 for the year).
I gave up on trying free streams. Virus and ad block protection was a PITA to over ride.

Bit of advice for cable internet service, buy your own cable modem and router from best buy, Amazon, etc. Mine paid for itself in less than a year for what my cable company wanted to charge for leasing their equipment.

We have been using an OTA antenna that I installed in the attic along with Philo for the last few months. Philo has most of the channels that we watch, but I do miss ESPN, and regional Fox Sports. My son and I watch the Royals and he also watches the Thunder on Fox Sports Oklahoma. If I could find a way to stream those for a reasonable price, I would be set.

Thought about Sling but with extras for the DVR and NBCSn wasn’t sure the savings were worth it.
Thanks for the info!!

I too have been experimenting with cutting cord. We tried YouTube tv for a month acted like we didn’t still have google fiber. YouTube tv worked fairly well once you get accustomed to picking channel from guide and waiting for slight pause for stream to start. Unlimited DVR was nice but they call it add to library.

We stopped trial after 30 days when we started finding certain shows that were blocked like one chiefs game day shows on KMBC, also some Xmas shows etc. would say cannot be watched or streamed over internet we were a bit turned off by that even though the subscription included the local channels.

We could get around it by using antenna and then using OTA DVR but then have to use two apps and manage 2 DVR which is not out of the question yet but looking at alternatives. I’m going to try Hulu+ next.

Yeah, in the op. I've been watching quite a bit on there. As far as free streaming, that one is pretty good.

Yeah I have it on my phone, watching Cowherd at work. He said Mahomes is the best QB in the league and picked the Chiefs to win the SB.

A couple of years ago we switched from Directv to Sling. Saved a lot of money but didn’t love the service. Then YouTube tv came out and we switched to that. Really liked it except for no NFL network and the app would freeze on my lg tv and I would have to reboot the Tv. We have always had Xfinity internet. They offered a good deal for two years for tv and internet so I canceled YouTube tv. After the two years is up I’ll probably go back to YouTube tv

Update: After installing my outdoor antenna, I get 61 OTA channels. That along with Roku and Philo gives me more content than I could possibly ever watch. The only thing I'm missing is ESPN and NFLN, which I hardly ever watch anyway. I will miss Colleen and Kay, but I'm saving $80 a month. I should have done this a long time ago

Find a friend who still has cable/ satellite and pay them $5 a month for their login and use it for NFLN and ESPN.

I miss NFLN too. You could consider getting the Hulu, Disney+, ESPN+ bundle for $12.99 a month to satisfy your ESPN needs. All 3 of those for that price isn't too bad.

I looked at that, but Disney would be a waste, Hulu didn't have the channels I wanted ( mainly Hallmark for the Mrs) and I don't watch enough ESPN to make it worthwhile. This whole thing was to try and save money, so I'm pretty happy for now. If I want to, next Football season I can subscribe to ESPN through Roku for $5 per month

One other thing, which has it's quirks, is an app called Mobdro. It basically gives you low quality SD streams of channels like NFL Network. I have it on my Firestick. When you load it, it asks you to support it by either letting it play ads sometimes or letting it use your devices bandwidth to help stream. I'd obviously not recommend letting it use your device to stream. However, you can still basically get NFL Network, ESPN, etc. through it for nothing.
