From Peter King’s MMQB article:

Quote:
STARTING PLAYERS IN THE 2018 NFL DRAFT INTERLUDE. Interesting question. Queried about how many starting-caliber players they felt were in this draft, six scouting people or GMs over the weekend came back with these figures: 35, “40 to 50,” “about 70,” 73, “75-ish,” 83 and 111. I asked because I wanted to figure out whether it made sense for the Colts to try to trade down one more time.
Looks the Chiefs don’t need to trade up from 54...they need to trade up from their first 3rd into the early 3rd or late 2nd rd.

I’ve always felt in any draft that picks 1-100 are the elite picks. It just seems like anything after that is not good. Of course there are always outliers.

Anything after the 3rd round is a gamble. That’s why I’d always be willing to trade picks in rounds 4-7 to get more picks in rounds 1-3. I’d gladly trade my 4th rounders to move into the 3rd round.

You don't have to hit on every pick, but damn, you need to be pretty sucessful and the Chiefs were really good with Dorsey.

2013
Yeah, Fisher has been solid not great, but he's a legit starting LT. But then Dorsey nailed it in the third round with Kelce. Just one hit like Kelce make all the difference in the world.

2014
Maybe Dorsey's worst draft, but we got starters in LDT and Fulton. Nothing sexy, but damn nailing two 6th rounders makes an aful draft more bearable.

2015

Peters, Morse, Conley, Nelson, Ramik Wilson, and Nunez-Roches

I mean Peters was an instant rock star, but don't discount what the others meant to this team.

2016
Chris Jones, Murray, Demarcus Robinson, Tyreek Hill

Hill in the 5th, totally makes that draft. Its incredible. Love Chris Jones.

2017

Mahommes and Hunt, 1st and 3rd rounders. C'mon man.

Just find me a 2-3 legit starters and I'll be a happy man. Find me one dude who becomes all world like Kelce, Hill, Jones, Houston before them. Yeah. then you are playing with house money!

Perhaps they have had their eye on a specific QB for a couple years, and said QB is just declaring for the draft this year. Maybe they have liked Mayfield or someone else all along and knew they needed additional draft capital this year to acquire said player at all cost.

In Re: to Hoover, yes I think Dorsey’s drafts typically had 1-2 great players and that was really nice. A big issue though is that most of the other picks weren’t good at all. Many times the picks struggled to make the 53-man roster in their first year, leaving the roster quite thin by the time we got to 2017.

If Veach has a big draft this year, it could go a long ways to impacting the Super Bowl fun next year. Shit, I think there’ll be at least one UDFA he hits on

Bullshit.

This team has a few spots it needs to fill on a very talented roster.

Mahomes, Henne
Hunt, Ware, West
Watkins, Hill, Conley, Robinson, DAT, Acheson, Kemp
Kelce, Amaro, Harris
Fisher, Ehinger, Morse, LDT, Schwartz, Erving, Witzman

On offense, I’m drafting a development QB in the late rounds, leaving the WRs alone, upgrading the RBs is possible with minimal resources. A 4th rounder would get a good one. I’m trying to get a premier guy at LG or center. My choice there would be James Daniels if they can’t fill the spot in FA. He’s very well balanced, being very effective in pass protection and run blocking.

We can’t depend on Morse or Ehinger...a guy that can step right in at either spot and play at a high level to protect our investment in Mahomes needs to be a priority.

———-

On Defense, we have some nice pieces, but tons of work needs to be done to unlock this units potential.

Jones, RNR, Williams, Jenkins, Bailey
Houston, Ford, Kpass, Ragland, Hitchens, Nicholas, Eligwe, Smith
Berry, Fuller, Nelson, Amerson, Murray, Sorenson, McQuay

Adding a bunch of late rounders to that group of players isn’t going to help at all.

That group needs 2-3 PLAYERS that can step in and do the job...not a few JAGs that will get cut.

The great part about this years draft is that it’s DEEP in the secondary...guys that would normally be in the mid first will be there in the first 10 picks of the second round. Maybe even past that. That should allow Veach the ability to move up and get talent at a discount, even if it costs multiple picks to move up.

We need a CB, S and DL that can come in and provide an impact playing a role early on and to grow into larger roles as the team matures.

They need to do what they did last year and not be afraid to move up to get guys they like.

Mahomes
Hunt

Dude, why the negative takes all offseason on the Chiefs moves?

Veach has been nothing if not decisive and following his plan to a "Tee".

I don't get it.

Nah saying it would be crazy for them to trade it in the draft isn't being negative. While I think they overpaid for Watkins I like what they've done in the off season. They aren't a player away though. They still need to upgrade at guard, acquire more talent on the defensive line, and some depth and the linebacker position and the secondary looks like a mess. Stay put in the draft fill 3 or 4 of those holes I mentioned.

No team is a player away this time of year... I think we'll still be acquiring talent in the coming weeks. Re: the draft. I just don't think we have the ammo to move up much. That being said, they obviously want impact athletes and will sacrifice quantity for quality.

Totally agree. We need depth as well as quality players from this draft and thus I think it would be foolhardy to trade away picks just to move up a few spots. The rush to get the QB's and the obvious "stars" such as Nelson, Barkley, Chubb, Ridley, Smith etc In the first round should see a lot of quality fall to us If we stay patient.

Exactly. How dare Veach identify an impact defensive player and get him.
