Chiefs agree to trade Alex Smith to Washington

Now you wait until March 14th for it to become official...

The Kansas City Chiefs under-performed in the playoffs this season, but regardless of that result we hear that changes to the roster have been expected for months now.

It has been widely speculated that Patrick Mahomes will replace Alex Smith at quarterback, and that Smith could be an enticing trade chip for a team that’s currently short of 2018 draft picks following last year’s trade for Mahomes.

That’s the obvious move that could happen. It also wouldn’t be surprising if Tamba Hali retires soon and Derrick Johnson is allowed to walk if he chooses to continue his career elsewhere. You can throw late-season pickup Darrelle Revis into that pool as well.

But we also wouldn’t be shocked to see a few more names of note added to that list. Punter Dustin Colquitt is a free agent and is not guaranteed to come back at age 35. Defensive tackle Bennie Logan and wide receiver Albert Wilson also have expiring contracts, and we’ve heard that Wilson especially could be looking for a bigger role elsewhere. It expanded late in the season, but we hear Wilson could be a target of the Chicago Bears, who could use someone with experience playing for new head coach Matt Nagy, Kansas City’s offensive coordinator last season.

Other possible salary-cap hits include Allen Bailey and Dee Ford. Cutting Bailey could save the team $6 million following a few injury-plagued seasons, and Ford – who hasn’t consistently rushed the passer, which was supposed to be his forte – would be on the books for $8 million in 2018. It might be surprising to some to see such as young pass-rush prospect cut before his rookie deal is up, but it’s absolutely a possibility.

I would keep Bailey over ford any day of the week.

Ya he needs to take Cousins off. The trade might not go through still, but it'd be a lot closer.

Foles expressing man-love for Alex:

Quote:
"Washington is very fortunate to have a quarterback in Alex Smith. My year with him was one of my favorite years of football," Foles said. "Just being there in Kansas City, getting to work with him, seeing a guy that for some reason people critique all the time, I mean, the guy's a winner. I mean, look at him. Look at what he did this year and he just keeps coming. He keeps getting better."

Foles labeled Smith as a player who "can turn a locker room around," calling him "one of the most athletic guys" in the NFL.

Alex Smith. The guy that just won't retire when he should. Willing to risk it all for his Foundation. Noble idiot.

Nope. I'm just chillin'... waiting for the NFL Combine.. watching prospects. Watching Netflix... mildly eager to later watch NFL rosters fill out and swap around players for the new season.

willing to risk it all for his foundation?

are you ****ing serious here?

are you trying to insinuate that is the only reason he's still playing? you are ****ing delusional.

have you got a link to him saying he's donating all his redskins salary?

Cousins is a FA. It was Week 1 of the offseason which means that unless they signed Cousins to a brand new deal....he isn't on the team.

Who cares. Their problem, not ours.
That's what's odd about all this.

They are paying 34 year old Alex Smith as much in salary (plus the pick/Fuller) as they likely would have had they locked up Cousins long term two years ago instead of jerking him around.

****ing idiots.

Did he give Smith a 4 year extension for $71M guaranteed? That probably tips the deal in the Redskins favor!

It's just AMAZING to sit here on the other side of the debate and, for ONCE, not have to slap morons upside the head defending a dumbass move just because the Chiefs made it.
