Chiefs agree to trade Alex Smith to Washington

Quarterback Alex Smith has a new home, as sources tell The Star that the Chiefs have reached agreement to trade their veteran starter of the last five seasons to Washington.

There is no word on the compensation yet, and any trade involving Smith can’t be completed until the first day of the new league year,

which begins at 3 p.m. on March 14. But the sources say the deal is in place and will proceed.


Smith, 33, is coming off a stellar season in which he set career-highs in passing yards (4,042), touchdowns (26) and passer rating (104.7).

However, Smith was entering the final year of his contract with the Chiefs, and he has a cap number of $20.6 million for 2018. By trading

him, the club stands to save $17 million.

The deal also clears the way for 2017 first-round draft pick Patrick Mahomes to become the Chiefs’ new starting quarterback. Mahomes’ regular-season NFL debut, a 27-24 win over the Denver Broncos on Dec. 31, was a success.

Mahomes completed 22 of 35 passes for 284 yards with an interception in the game and showed poise while leading the Chiefs’ game-winning drive.

“I think he’s got what it takes man,” Denver cornerback Aqib Talib said at the Pro Bowl. “He’s got a super strong arm, he can make all

the throws. He made great reads in our game. I know we had a simple game plan on defense, but he made great reads and took control of the

game.”

Smith was acquired from San Francisco in 2013 for two third-round picks. He posted a 50-26 record as a starter since arriving in

Kansas City and has made two straight Pro Bowl appearances.

Quarterback is the most important position in ALL OF TEAM SPORTS. And tonight, for the first time, we have a legitimate hope that our best player might soon be the most important position.

If they showed up here, and became fans of the team it would have been better received then the method they used.

They showed up here, and told everybody that didnt want Alex Smith that they were stupid for not wanting him.

I may be in the minority here, but I was one of the ones that didnt want him. That trade represented the last 30 years of the same failed experiment rewound and played over again. Then some 49er fans are going to tell me what i should think about it without the knowledge and heartbreak of being a chiefs fan for all that time?

The Chiefs Kingdom isn't an exclusive club. Anyone that wants to be a Chiefs fan should be welcome to be one. People talk about how friendly people in the fly over states are, then they act just the opposite.

I am good with any fan of another team becoming a Chiefs fan. The more the merrier. And the more viewpoints the better too.

Let me correct your post to reflect real world accuracy:

"So a bunch of loud and abrasive new fans showed up, intent on overinflating the value of a mediocre QB, and did so in a rude and obnoxious manner whereby they ruined many discussions on the forum with their ceaseless defense of Alex Smith, and not just QB discussions.

They ruined WR discussions when Alex Smith went a full season without a WR TD.

They ruined offensive line discussions because Smith was took so many intentional sacks.

They ruined coaching discussions because Smith would constantly throw checkdowns or at least short of the sticks on 3rd downs.

If a dozen 49er fans had come here saying, "hey Smith is what he is, but we like hims so we are going to hang here too and get in on the discussion" all would have been fine. Especially if you said "hey weren't not Chiefs fans but we are harmless". Instead, the worst offenders here became flaming transparent hypocrites trying to convince everybody here they were suddenly die hard Chiefs fans and would remain so long after Alex left. It was laughable how transparently juvenile it was.

Instead of a dozen"fans" you had a dozen loud, rude, obnoxious, insistent, persistent "advocates" repetitively hammering their same extreme opinions into every thread, over and over ad nauseum.

It was not just a few Niner fans coming here to be cool about following Alex Smith. It was a clan of starry eyed Acolytes trying to convince everybody else on this forum that Alex Smith was more than what he was, and doing it in a very aggravating way that alienated everybody here to the jerks doing it.
