In a game the Chiefs lost by six points, Alex Smith missed three wide open TDs

And yes he had a clean pocket on the second one.

When has this happened before...against the Steelers...in a crucial game....

Spoiler!

Flame away.

they did get off the field..allowed 17 points.....

you said yourself the D was to blame for the lack of time of possesion. Yet the offense didnt make a 1st down in the 1st half...

the whole point of bend not break is to wear down the the other team down by the 4th quarter.....(letting them punch themselves out)

why do you think we score so many points in the 4th quarter?

Its not rocket science....they scored 7 on us iin the second half and went scoreless most of the half...only reason they scored 7 was a fluke.

the only thing here that failed was the offense....Bend not break worked fine.....we wore them down by the end of the game our defense was beating them.

just look at how well we do in the 4th quarter vs our opponents

absolutely no offense except off of the muffed free kick in the 1st half..and you blame the defense for the time of possesion when they literally had one TD drive in an entire game filled with short and unproductive drives, and the offense scored 11 points

amazing

The bend-but-don't-break is designed to not give up big plays so that the offense needs to string together 10-12 well-executed plays to score. It's a high floor, low ceiling philosophy.

Let's just take a look at the first few drives of the game:

Drive #1: Pittsburgh, 9 plays, 6:19
Drive #1: KC: 6 plays, 2:11 (combined, because of the weirdness on the free kick)
Drive #2: Pittsburgh: 12 plays, 6:25

The first two drives of the game, when KC's defense was freshest, it allowed Pittsburgh to have the ball for 12:44. Good luck finding an offensive rhythm when you're on the sideline for the entire first quarter because A) your defense can't get the other team off the field and B) your center snaps the ball through the end zone, killing your first possession.

Now, if you want to say that the offense played poorly in the first half, no one will disagree with you, but the defense wasn't struggling in the first half because of the offense. They gave up two straight long drives despite the Chiefs getting two straight possessions in between due to special teams turnovers.

And if the Chiefs were wearing out the Steelers so much by...being on the field on defense, why did Bell have 15 carries for 78 yards in the second half?

The defense can get the offense off the field, too.
Just like how Pitt got KC's offense off the field.

The Steelers ran 11 more plays.
The Steelers gained 7 yards per play to KC's 4.8.

What is sustainable about a defense giving up 7 yards per play?
How does an offense "punch itself out" by gaining 7 yards per play?

we had their number in the second half

the plan was working

the offense failed

sorry the truth hurts....our offense sucked

im not thrilled with bend dont break but we just needed to score an average number of points.. hell even slightly below

if we cant beat pitt when they score only 17 points i mean, thats terrible offense...period..i think we had 12 possesions

11 net points in 12 possesions is a joke

You're punching above your weight class here. The Chiefs do better in the 4th quarter vs their opponents because they have the second highest TOP in the league.

This is circular logic

If TOP matters, then the Chiefs do well in the 4th quarter in large part because they have a high TOP

If TOP doesn't matter, then why do the Chiefs, with such a high TOP, do so well in the 4th quarter

Which is it?

Change the goalposts.....

you blamed the TOP on the defense. Thats bullshit.

the offense had 12 possessions. and didnt do shit with the ball....11 net points will not win games in the nfl against good teams..What youre trying to do is split hairs and argue over semantics...

bottom line is the defense did well enough to win the game

the offense...did not

edit: a win is a win..you cant say its fine for alex to 'win ugly' and then say the defense cannot do likewise. to me , bend not break = winning ugly. I dont like it..but basically it worked today. we had them...we could have won...had the offense even performed at a C level

If Pittsburgh's offense wasn't as fresh, why did Bell average 5+ YPC in the second half?

Pitt averaged 6.96 yards per play for the game, and 6.13 in the first half.

If Pitt was wearing down, why did they average more yards per play in the second half? Why did they average the same amount of rushing yardage?

If the BBDB worked, how does an offense that is tiring out gain more yards per play in the second half?

The defense got owned. 36 to 21 top. They did little to generate field position and got ran over.

I'm not moving the goalposts, I'm asking you to provide a source for your claim. I didn't say the offense played well. What I am saying, and what I will continue to say, is that a defense that gives up 194 net rushing yards at an average of 5.6 ypc is not going to get off the field and that is going to cause a huge disparity in TOP.

You need to keep better track of your arguments.

Does TOP matter or doesn't it?
If the Chiefs are better in the 4th quarter and have the second highest TOP in football, then how is their defense performing better in the 4th quarter if they spend less time on the field than all but one other defense in football if your defense being on the field tires out the other offense?
