Mahomes should feel right at home after tonight.

The Chiefs looked like his old college team last year--

• No offensive line

• Play/momentum-killing penalties

• A tight end (Escobar) who couldn't catch a cold in an incubator

• No run game

• A defense that couldn't wrap up and tackle one-legged nuns playing for The Over-the-Sacred Hill Sisters of the Invalid.

The difference tonight versus his final season at Tech was that this evening, he showed discipline in doing what the coaches told him to do and not trying to freelance every play.

That TD pass he threw? Tech fans and alumni have seen that pass dozens of times. It's almost a Mahomes trademark--but it doesn't make the highlight reels because he makes it look too easy.

Stave just needs to go. He ain't it and never is going to be.

Conclusion: Mahomes got his first NFL game under his belt, stayed cool, made no major mistakes.

Mission accomplished.

Fair assessment.

The San Fran game reminded me of Mahomes' freshmen year when he made the starting lineup.

He wasn't ready then and he's not ready now.

The difference was that at Tech, he was the best QB to put in. That is not the case this year in Kansas City. I am not an Alex Smith hater nor supporter. Smith is what he is and my opinion is not going to change that.

What we saw in the San Fran game is that there are ten more players on the offensive side of the ball that are directly relevant to the QB's success and in that game, most of them failed. And just like at Tech, on the defensive side of the ball, there are eleven players that have a direct impact on the degree of urgency a QB must play with in order to win a game.

And given the (KC) defense's inability to wrap up and finish/secure a tackle on the running game, I'm fairly certain Mahomes called up his dad and said, "Hell, this is just like playing at Tech except the other guys are bigger and faster."

He'll get there. The question is, how far do you want him to go? If he is pressured to start this season, I think a large number of people are going to be disappointed. The ideal situation will be to redshirt him and give him as many snaps as possible with the first and second teams and look for any and all opportunities to put him for several consecutive series during the regular season game.

Then, come 2018. . . sit back, pop open a beer and enjoy.

Us Tech alums, we've seen this show before. It's a good one.

You definitely nailed it about the rest of the team aside from PMII. Did not like how the 1st team o-line played at all and granted we had several starters out on the 1st team defense but they didn't look any better and only stepped up in the red zone looking a lot like last year. Hope the trench play on both sides drastically improves but I doubt it will.

Did you see where NFL Network's Top Fantasy Defense are the Chiefs ?? Man I hope this comes to real fruition but I seriously have my doubts.

What was wrong with the first team OL outside of run blocking? They kept Alex Smith upright pretty damn well and gave him lots of time to throw.

Well the run blocking is HUGE because if you can't run the ball the defense then just tees off on the pass rush and I didn't see tons of time for Alex to throw. He is just PTSD'd enough to know when to step up and get rid of it out of not trusting more than adjustment IMHO. For my eyes it wasn't pretty at all. I was concerned last year about the OL and it came to fruition because we had a much tougher schedule in 16 than in 15 and this year's run defenses and pass rush defenses we will face in 17 are much tougher IMHO than last year. Watch your DVR game again and pay attention to the OL pass blocking. It wasn't pretty at all IMHO for an o-line that has played together now for 3-4yrs and supposedly ranked as a top five unit in the NFL. Pay particular attention to Alex's run.

You're not going to get much better than that, bud. That was moderately above average pass blocking. About 4 seconds per pass, maybe longer on some throws. Not even the Cowboys or the Raiders average more than 5-6+ seconds, which seems to be what you're expecting this offensive line to do.

Outside of blowing up the starting offensive line and replacing Fisher, Witzmann, and Morse with significant and expensive improvements, that's a pretty good line we've got in terms of pass blocking. They did fairly well on Friday.

Beathard did a good job on that long one spotting the falling player, but overall our 3rd team DB's were shit. Huge openings. The scrub DB's just seemed mismatched against their scrub WR's, and the playcalling was more aggressive. That TD Mahomes threw was tightly played.

Beathard was the QB I really liked watching the combine. Good pick for them.
