MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

I don't think the Chiefs can trade for a better QB without it hurting somewhere else more than the gain at QB would provide. The Chiefs probably have to run with Alex and keep drafting QBs and hope that one of them turns out to be good enough to take the job away.

I don't want Foles to get the chance to win the job. We've seen this before where the "stop gap" plays well enough to suddenly get another year of the starting job. Foles is on his third team in 4 years, 2 of those teams he lost the starting job. He's not going to amount to anything, and I don't want the Chiefs to get fooled into thinking he might.

Stick with Smith for another year, while his replacement is groomed. It's the best way to guarantee that some other bozo doesn't wiggle his way into the ineptitude that is the QB position for this franchise.

You make a good point, even though its hard to like Alex right now...

I can deal with one more year IF they draft a QBOTF in the first couple rounds. That is the only way that it would be acceptable for Smith to return as the starter.

And maybe while they are at it, they can tell him to throw it when Hill is gone for an open TD or get benched.

everyone but you calls this year "one and done". They played one game and lost. One out of four they won a game, Two out of four they lost their first game, One Out of four they didn't even make it.

What was your point again?

One playoff game appearance, which ended in a loss is considered "One and done".

2013: One playoff appearance and a loss. One and Done.
2015: Two playoff appearances, one loss. NOT One and Done.
2016: One playoff appearance and a loss. One and Done.

I see no reason why Foles can't step into the starting role and "manage" the games within 90% of Alex Smith.

I doubt he's better and I doubt he's worse.

It's time to move on from Smith, IMO.

4 years is enough.

Apparently, in his twisted little mind, the bye week counts as a win.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

The thing for me is, the style of QBing that Alex does is not something that I think is very difficult to replicate. I think there are any number of QBs that can step in right now and do what he does....rookies included.

He's proven it to most of the homers on this board, and they don't even realize it.

After all, all he does is win.

First off, $10 million is peanuts for an NFL starting QB.

Secondly, he proved it in 2013, while in Philadelphia, before Chip Kelly dismantled the entire team.

Foles failed in St. Louis because Jeff Fisher and the Rams organization a giant pile of steamy turds with the blandest offense I've ever seen, not to mention, an atrocious offensive line and outside of Gurley, awful skill players.

Foles stepped in nicely at Indy and put in an Alex Smith type game against Jacksonville.

After a year working with Childress, Nagy and Reid, while resetting his fundamentals, I see no reason why he can't lead the Chiefs to 10-12 wins while the QBOTF (hopefully, Mahomes) is learning on the bench.
