MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Smith is starting in 2017. If we draft someone this year it'll be round 2 or later . And that dude will be on the bench learning for at least 1.5 seasons while Smith continues business per usual.

This fantasy that Foles can do better than Smith is about as dumb as the arguments a year ago to start Daniel/Murray/Bray when our team started 1-5...

My stance is that I think KC would have a better chance to win the SB in 2017 with Foles rather than Smith. Perhaps a much better chance, but we haven't saw enough of Foles to really say how that might go for 16 games.

We already know Dorsey/Reid were prepared to take Lynch last year if he well to them. Similar reports were out about Manziel in 2014. We know that they have kept an eye out each year for the right guy.

This is the year that they finally get him, and trade up if they have to.

Don't think I heard Manziel. Mortenson reported that we were interested in Carr and later Andy said he would have drafted him if Alex wasn't on the roster.

The Rams situation was a raw f**king deal. Worst OL in the league and his best wide out was Tavon f**king Austin.

Nick Foles isn't taking this team anywhere. Realistically the Chiefs just need to take their medicine and reap what they have sown with the idiotic Smith trade and extension.

They are now caught between a rock and a hard place, and they must choose the least expensive option that damages them the least for the foreseeable future. That means no Smith, and definitely no Romo, an option which should make every Chiefs fan's skin CRAWL with disgust.

Because what are you going to do if they go 10-6 with Foles? Give HIM an extension? No...you're going to draft a damn QB.

Barring an unrealistic Super Bowl fantasy, Nick Foles success/failure should not determine the future of this franchise.

If he plays well next season he can stay on as a backup or compete with a rookie. At a cheap price.

Lay in the bed you made, Chiefs.

But of course who are we kidding. Smith will be back and in November we'll hear the first rumor of another extension.

That sucks to think about considering that we could have taken Carr before extending Smith.

These guys are smart, much smarter than we are with this stuff we should assume.. they know that its time. If everyone else can see it, how could they not?
