MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

I propose the Chiefs do what all SB winning franchises typically do and draft a MFing franchise QB. Someone who can go toe to toe with Derek Carr for the next decade and not depend on the defense always to play extremely well.

And if they want to play Alex, or Romo, or Brees for the next year or two, then fine by me. But draft a f**king QB. Why you wouldn't want this over Smith is beyond anyone.

Bottom 5 run defense that gives up 170 yards to Leveon Bell doesn't qualify for a good defense. If you watched any football, you would know this Steeler secondary was revamped throughout the season and are playing excellent football.

You don't win 9 straight because your defense sucks ****.

Defense wins championships. Even if we beat Pitt, we were destined to fail in the final two games with our run defense being shit and our pass rush being non-existent.

You fix one of the two next season and if our corners continue to play well...we can easily go the distance.

Easily go the distance? Nothing will be easy with the offense in its current state. Impossible? No, but it'll be quite the uphill battle with Smith under center.

Jamaal Charles -> Waste of cap space
Jeremy Maclin -> did not perform to 2015 standards
Running backs -> 50% less TD's from 2015

Smith -> total TD rate identical to 2015, increased QBR, higher completion %


Yet somehow Smith is the problem ??
