MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Yep. Under no circumstances should he get another contract extension, but he's still almost certainly going to be under center next year.

Yep, that's definitely the reality of our situation. However, a year from now I think we can get rid of him without losing much money...

I just figured something out and it should explain some of Alex's actions during the game.
You can not throw a pass for a hidden TD unless you are scrambling from a hidden pass rush.

Or who say, "That just happens. All QBs miss throws and don't see wide open guys during the course of the game" and then proceed to make excuses for Alex because the players around him dropped a couple passes missed assignments on D, and had bad snaps against blitzers.

You know, things that happen during the course of a game to ALL freakin players...

I can't believe anyone thinks we can't move on from Alex right now. We can and if Dorsey doesn't he's is really fugging up bad on a Pioli level shoving Smith down our throats when he clearly sucks.

-They were all over Paxton Lynch last year and apparently had interest in moving up for him.
-There was a rumor from B/R that the Chiefs are judging what Alex does in the 2nd half of the season to see if they want to move on.
-His cap # is rising and he's clearly starting to decline.
-Andy moved on from McNabb at the same age when he started to decline.

I think they are going to look hard for his replacement this spring.

Andy Reid doesn't work for John Dorsey.

Hunt set up the system so that they are equals, answerable to Hunt.

Dorsey and Reid have to work together, and if Reid is still happy with Smith, then we are stuck with Smith.

As much as I'd love to see the Chiefs move on from Smith, it's better for the team long term if they reach that decision mutually.

Unfortunately I think this is the case we will most certainly be stuck with Alex Smith another year. The positive is we can work on this offensive line and what ever else is needed and so that next year we can go all in for a draft pick QBotf and he should have a O-line stable enough to let him be comfortable with.

Dallas worked on their O-line and their rookie quarterback was much better off for it.

As much as I want to draft a quarterback I think another year of building an O-line is the way to go. I still want to draft a quarterback though for competition and a chance he can be really good.

Now that we have a speedster to stretch the field having a solid O-line will only help to get the quarterback to throw it deep. Not wanting Alex Smith but no excuses either. If we can just hold out another year without any of us jumping off a bridge or bullet to the head I think we will finally get our first round draft pick 2018.

I want to believe in something other than unicorns and fairy tails.
