MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Let's not all pretend like we don t know what's going to happen here. Smith is 100 percent playing next year. He has max two years and knowing the Chiefs they will extend him to a third. All jokes aside, the best the Chiefs can do is stick with mr dip shit mediocre for next year and draft a QB to be groomed. Except, the problem is we pick 27th. Now we could trade up, sure but let's remember here its the Chiefs so most likely won't happen. So basically I'm betting that the Chiefs stick with smith and draft another nobody in the fifth and we have another repeat of this year. Honestly we will probably regress but that's just me being pessimistic. The story will be the same as it ever was every ****ing year with this team. Im willing to bet I'll be saying the same shit as the older guys say on here now in 20 years. Maybe I won't have kids so I won't pass on the curse being a Chiefs fan to my offspring. It's too late for my nephews, poor guys.

The Chiefs love Smith.

They love him. He is adored in that building.

It's already guaranteed he's starting next season.

I would bet anything he's not only the starter next year, but he'll go into 2018 as the starter and lose his job by the end of the year to a rookie.

They will pay him $20 million in 2018. To lose his job.

Because they love him.

This doesn't surprise though, because there were reports at the end of the Pioli era that Clark wanted to keep Cassel. Cus he's such a groovy guy!

Alex isn't elite. This is known. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else there is to discuss.

Those two intermediate throws to Tyreek and Conley were wide open.

Any above average QB with a decent arm should be able to hit that.

And on the intermediate route Hill was running, even if you don't want to hit him, Kelce came wide open, but Alex was too busy doing jack squat.

This was one of the worst games he's ever played from a "missing open receivers" standpoint.

And the two short throws he missed to Ware...shit Cassel could have thrown the first one (Ware barely got a finger on it) and the screen pass he ****ed up was brutally bad.

Alex isn't an above average quarterback with a decent arm. Is this new news?

There is a lot to discuss with the group of idiots here that don't think Alex had anything to do with the loss. (I'm looking at YOU, Tiger)
