Is it time to start Foles over Smith?

Pathetic.

He's played poorly today

Thoughts?

I think you're stretching/reaching with your explanation and I absolutely think the system makes all the difference...alex smith is a good example of that as is Foles because you can look at his work with the right system for him in Philly versus his work with the Rams and its another example...

In any case its a minor point , but as completion % is the best measure of accuracy that we have currently....its clear to see that going from 59% to 64% is indeed a huge improvement in accuracy
Foles best season I Philly was in chip Kelly's system though.

That is very true. Chip kelly's 1st season was foles best year...but he had a big drop off after the 1st season (in certain aspects of his game). He didnt do as well chip kelly's second season.

The last season of Reid's was a disaster for Philly as a whole...so I'm not sure that we can even look at those 6 games as anything meaningful since that was a sinking ship

I also dont know alot about the differences between Kelly's system in PHI and Reid's here in kc...

It just seems like that Rams year/partial year is an anomaly more than anything ...just by the numbers

I can probably provide a bit of insight as I watched every Rams game last year. First of all it's hard to compare anything that happened in Philly or will happen in KC to his time with the Rams. The offenses (if you want to call what Fisher runs an offense) are just waaay too different. People here that complain about Smith/Reid being conservative should watch the Rams for a while.

With that said having watched Foles for all of last season plus the Rams played Philly in '14 he is very high risk/high reward. That throw to Hill is something I've seen a lot from Foles. Just wind up & throw it as high as you can & hope your WR catches it.

What I will say regarding his time in StL he actually played pretty well the 1st couple games although his stats didn't really show it. He had a few drops from his WR's & most of his time as a starter was before Gurley started playing. He started attempting to do too much & his play went downhill.

It's similar, as both are their own versions of the WCO.

Pat Shurmur, Philly's OC at the time under Kelly, worked with Reid from 1999-2008.

Those same fans are clamoring for Alex Smith today.

I know because I'm friends with many die-hards and receive notes from them all the time.

Fans are very often just outright dumb.

I think the biggest difference is just the pace in which Kelly runs the offense.

The team is in ruins and they would rather have KC's team than SF's right now but to say theyre clamoring for alex smith ot that alex smith would be the solution in SF is not true to even the slightest degree.

Jesus. They're going to get him killed.

Foles' ability to change the way teams defend KC is undeniable. A qb that is that big of a deep threat could open up everything underneath that Reid loves so much. Of course, if his accuracy in the short game doesn't improve, it could all be for nothing. And the big unknown is ball security. Does opening up the offense at the cost of increased turnovers balance out? Will there even be a sizeable increase in turnovers?

Probably too many variables for Foles to get a legit shot in any way other than winning the job after an extended absence for Smith due to injury. That doesn't appear to be happening.

For the most part, no.. Some have remarked that they do, but the majority of 49ers fans have this train of thought:

Even though they all realize he is better than what they have, they also believe the team roster is a burning pile of shit. These people don't believe Alex would be enough anyway, due to the terrible defensive situation and underwhelming pass weapons. On that, they are probably right.

So no. Many do not want an expensive, 32 yr old QB that isn't a gunslinger. Fans get VERY dug in on their opinion, and adored the "promise" of Kaepernick. So those people would never admit that Alex is better today, or admit that SF made a mistake.

Dude, it's not just "one" person, it's dozens. Hell, someone even asked me in a Facebook note last week "Can we have Alex Smith back?".

I guess your experience is different than mine.

Two vastly different questions

1. Whether they think should have stayed with Alex
2. Whether they want Alex back starting right this moment.

9ers are aways away from respectability. Even without the history, they are probably best off starting new.

I guess so since I live here and know people with season tickets and my wife is a die hard niners fan, and I go to a sports bar at least 2-3 times a week...and most of my friends are die hard niners fans including both of my best friends...and most people I work with are either niner or raider fans....

Not to get technical but the exact quote I had a problem with was that they are 'clamoring' for alex smith to come back.

100% false..end of story...i live here. Its not true.

Of course 49ers fans want Alex back. He's literally the only enjoyable football they've had since Jeff Garcia.

Doesn't make them right. If they had suffered through years of mediocre QBs we have, instead of total shit ones, they'd be glad he was gone.

Makes it a lot easier to settle for mediocrity in the present when you have case full of Lombardis.
