Help finding my son a new car
My sons 2000 Ford Explorer front wheel completely froze up and destroyed the brakes and there is a problem with the rear axle too. Repair cost is over $1000 and I'm not paying that. Time to look at a new car for him.

Who were the resident dealers on this site again?

Here are the cars he is looking at. Any opinions would be great as I have had it with car shopping these last few years.

I feel for ya, man. My 18 year old wrecked his first car after having it just about 3 weeks. Then he was working across town and so I would let him borrow my truck at times because it was a PITA to drive out there. He was fine for awhile and then nearly 1 year after his first accident, he put the side of my truck into a highway entrance sign. Let me tell ya, he was scared shitless. Perhaps that was because I had always told him to drive very carefully and if he ever wrecked my truck I would murder him. /shrug

Needless to say, he paid for the body shop ($500 insurance deductible) and the raise in insurance rate. Hopefully, that will teach him. I would kick him off my insurance and make him get his own, but it would be a lot more costly for him. And the kid is working his butt off. We helped him buy a new used car (of which he's about to pay off today) and he's been okay with that so far. Knock on wood.

I tore up a transmission and ripped a mirror off a car when I was in High School. I got to pay for all that. It's a different time though. Shit is ****ing expensive. If a kid works 600 hours at $7(50 hours a week for the summer), that will get him $4200. That's pretty tough to get a car bought and gas and...and...and... On top of it they pretty much can't get a job until they're 16. It's just pretty tough to make a car work at that money.

I had saved a mountain of money because I started working every day during the summer when I was 10. That and I worked far more than 50 hours a week during the summer.

Either way, unless all the kid does is work during his teen years, he's going to need some help. It really sucks for the parents.

My nephew dinged up his car the other day. He still owes his mom over half of it and my dad had to help him straighten shit out. Kids are dumb. I was too, I just had the income to pay for it.

Bent the sub frame in my 79 Camaro. It was totaled after that. I had a friend that hit a curb at 15 mph and wrecked the axle and something else. Car was totaled.

I would just start making him have a personal loan to you if you don't feel like you should fit the bill and hold him responsible for his actions. If he can't afford the fix now which I assume he can't, you'll pay for it and then he owes you a minimum amount of money each month until it's paid off. That's what my parents did to me in high school and college.
