Ok, so I did this squirrel korean style. Seasoned flour, pan fried in butter, deglazed with rice wine vinegar and soy, and covered and low simmered for 1 hour. Holy crap is it good. My son and I picked every single piece of meat off that little feller, and it tasted like mild pork or turkey dark meat.

Skewered a nice Gobbler this morning with my bow. Interesting story, (somewhat).
I was a few hundred yards away from my dad, we were both in ground blinds. He started walking over to me and told me 3 big Toms showed up and he got one. The other two were just hanging around him. I hopped out of my blind, went up the hill and put some trees between me and the two remaining toms. I then combat-crawled on my stomache for 40 yards, taking it very slow. When I finally got them in range, my dad started using his call, (softly) and got them both to perk up and strut. I drew my bow, released, missed... I misjudged the distance and shot just over him. They ran a little ways and I hit my calls. I was amazed that they both responded and came walking back. I adjusted my position so that I had a decoy between us and waited. Sure enough, they came back in range and started messing with their fallen comrade. My Tom was actually pecking at the eye of the dead one. Weird shit. I drew again, released and hit him right thru the heart at about 35 yards. He's already in the freezer. Average beard, about 6-7 inches but any bird you get with a bow is a trophy to me. Tough work. |

Yes, I agree. I've shot 4 or 5 with my bow but it took me several years of calling and missing to get it right. I've never had them come back like that, either. Strange shit. You never know how these birds are going to respond.

You do know Bugs family has a turkey farm about an hour out of Omaha. No tags or in-season needed. His uncle Ron raises some very tasty birds. & I have total access year round.

Turkey hunting should be outstanding this year.
We've had 3 years of mild springs and relatively easy winters. Last year I saw piles of jakes and youngsters....this season fields should be full of 3yr olds. Very excited. 2 weeks I'll be turkey hunting and the 3rd I'll be heading south to shoot some pigs. |

I filmed a young girl kill her first bird, a 19lb jake, on Saturday after missing birds the past two years. She was glad to get the monkey off her back! Most of the birds are still grouped up pretty good here, but hens were already being bred. One more good year and we'll be back to a very healthy local population. |

Not that this is a hunting story, I wish I'd have had a gun so I could end it, but I didn't think it was worth a thread. Kind of an interesting story.
Anyway, I started the pivot today and was cleaning the nozzles when I look out and see this doe laying down in my wheat. I HATE deer. Hate them. A lot. And all the bastards around my field there are tame as hell. They piss me off. Infinitely. So I sicked Chief dog on it. I figured he needed to run some. Well, it turns out I'm an ass. Apparently this deer had been hit (I saw some headlight shards on the road and didn't think anything about it) and was all broken up. So Chief dog chases it down the field some and I can see it's back leg just flopping around, and it's front one on that side is pretty screwed up too. Eventually it couldn't take the pain any more and laid down. I didn't have a gun, so I guess the coyotes are going to have to have it. I really need to get a gun into my pickup. I guess at least it doesn't have antlers to ruin (more) tires. I did feel bad for it. I'm a cold hearted bastard, but I wish I had a gun to put it down. Here is chief dog giving it hell. Here you can see his back leg doing a whole lot of not a damn thing. I had to zoom in and crop it quite a bit. I wasn't keeping up in my rubber boots. |
