*****The Patrick Mahomes Thread*****

IT ****ING HAPPENED

OP UPDATE:

Because of all the interest in this thread, I've place all of the video content of Patrick Mahomes II's college career, and draft day goodness into a single post that can be found here. Enjoy!

Veach did an interview where he said that it's become a focus of their scouting of late - guys that they are confident have the situational awareness to realize that the ball could come to them at any time.

I mean I know we'd like to think that all players are like that, but we also know they aren't. It's a decade of habit for most of them - if you're 40-50 yards away from your QB and 6 seconds into the play, the ball's probably not coming your direction.

Mahomes just changes the calculus.

I agree. Pat is a magician at QB and hopefully the other guys will learn soon enough to never give up on a play.

That is a good comparison. Steph’s deep ball is another similar trait with Mahomes.

My theory is that it's a question of habit ... or tendencies, maybe ... more than anything.

Take Kelce, for example. He and AS11 had a great connection (that connection made Kelce's career, so far) and Kelce knew what to expect on every single play. The ball was coming out in 2.5 seconds (or less) and if everybody was covered, it was going to the third read in the flat. That was it.

It takes a bit of time and experience to retrain your brain and I honestly don't think Kelce's there yet. Or Sammy, for that matter.

Mahomes says, "Screw the flat, I'm looking downfield.", and he does it almost every down .. first, second, third ... doesn't matter to him. He played that way at Tech and that isn't going to change.

It's why he passed up Hunt on the TD to Sherman. AS11 would have made the "smart" play and gone to Hunt for 7 yards. Mahomes throws his fullback open on a wheel route down the boundary. Different players play different.
