The Fishing Thread

Searched around & only found the video fishing & BassMasters threads, i know their are plenty of outdoorsman here, so i figured it'd be cool to draw upon the Planets vast experience in all things fishing.

I only use spincast reels & fish mostly large/smallmouth bass & cats. My choice of reels is quite the source of derision from many people i know 'duffer gear', but i haul in my share of 6 pound bass & 10-20 pound cats on that gear no problem. With a little know-how you can use just about any technique you want to on 'duffer gear'.

Berkley Powerbaits are a big part of my trick bag, the difference between those & regular stuff is night & day. My best action last summer came on Mister Twister scented white curly tail grubs, on one day fishing from shore to a bridge pier, i caught smallies, bigmouths, perch & even 1 carp believe it or not... great day. But my bread & butter is a texas rigged Berkley worm, it'll wiggle through any kind of cover without getting hung up.

With cats i strictly bottom fish, no bobber & bait is just as basic... but its always in 2's to give'em a real treat... a shrimp/with a nightcrawler, liver/chunk of cheese etc. Cats are mostly for night sport to me, time to kick back a lil...

So thats me style, how do the rest of you guys get your fish on? What do you fish for, what do you use? IIRC Missouri's trout season just kicked off, anyone getting anything?

So I think I am going to buy this underwater fishing camera for my kayak. It is cheaper than installing a fish finder and is also easier. The ones you see in the local store are pretty expensive but this one has some great features for the price.

Guys...

I have been fishing my entire life, and last Sunday my world was changed forever.

I finally got a set-up that I felt was up to task, and it was....except for the hook.

I hung a Tarpon and it is one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life and I have done it all.

I shit you not, it is like lassoing a Cheatah and trying to pull it in.
Sky high launches out of the water. Furious, furious fight.

He straightened my hook out, and I haven't thought about a Bass since.

I will get one, and there will be pics.
Oh, yes, there will be pics.

I really can't imagine that being as effective as a fish finder. Rather than scanning the entire water column, you're limited only to the camera's field of view.

Hell, maybe they're really effective, though.

It is definitely limited but fishing out of a kayak I don't spend time on open water or in areas where I am trying to search for structure. I envision it being very useful fishing for crappie especially moving in and around trees. I am in a lot of spots that have a hundred trees in a small area so this will save me a lot of time and guesswork I hope.

The low cost compared to the big retailers makes it a lot more justifiable as well. I may get a fish finder eventually but to get a good one the investment will be over $150 easy. I hope it proves beneficial.

I look forward to reading about your experiences with it. Looks like a fun toy at the least, even if it doesn't get you catching more fish.

The only bad thing is it doesn't record. I could always record the screen with my phone though. It will be really neat just seeing what's down there.

I just bought the underwater camera. I am currently awaiting the wife questioning what the $150 was spent on. I think I will tape depth markers on the cord and build some kind of custom device for moving it around and rotating it.

Some kind of extending rod to reach out further and so that I can let cord out and brink it back and clamp the cord for keeping it at one spot. It comes with a little bobber to also help keep it in one spot once you find the depth you want. It is supposed to come around September 2nd so I can't wait to get it out there. It will be invaluable for ice fishing as well.

It's been a slow few weeks at my fishing hole. I think the snaggers got most of the fish.. But I did get a new personal record fish this afternoon!

I'm not sure what the weight was but I'd guess 20+. I think I'm gonna cut some perch up this weekend and head to the Kansas river.

I got to try out my underwater camera today in my kayak. I was very pleased. I could see the fish very well. Amongst the standing trees I was dropping the camera and quickly located the crappie. They were pretty active and were at about four feet deep.

The camera itself is shaped like a fish so some would come close and inspect it while others ignored it. It didn't seem to spook them either since I could locate precisely were they were and drop my line down and catch them. It also helped me know where the snags were.

The only bad thing about where I was today is that there are hundreds of standing trees. So no one spot has a huge population. They stopped biting around 11 and I presume they scattered to deeper water. The next test will be a smaller lake or creek above a reservoir.

Flathead isn't it? Nice catch. I've been shutout on my catfishing for almost all spring and summer. The Missouri River's been running at a level since early May that covers up the dikes I fish off of. Was the same way last fall. Been fishing twice since May when I went 2 times a week a couple of years ago. Sucks

Man, i have been trying to get someone to video tape me trying to catch one of the monsters.

I have had the most fun fishing of my entire life the last couple of days and I didn't even land of the fish I'm after.

I am catching blue gill with bread pulling them right off and hooking him to the big stick, pulling out a bunch of line and then throwing them hail mary style towards the rolling tarpon.

No matter how prepared I am for the power of one of these 50+lb monsters it is still a jarring thrill. And no fish gets more air.

If you like to fish and eve get the chance to after these guys, yo DO IT. It is Awesome

I cannot believe fish like this are in a freaking lake behind my house.
As soon as I land one I'll post the pics of everything.

You know babies make great flathead bait but nicely done great job.

I don't get why women make such a fuss about having babies look at this catfish it's pretty nice folks & that's a thrill to bring in one like that size.

You should be passing out cigars.
