We hunt SD every year. It's about a 9 hour drive to Redfield. The bird population is up this year over last year. We hunt opening weekend and pay a farmer to hunt his land. However, we try to go back a second time and always hunt public and knock on some doors. We shoot lots of birds on public it just takes longer. We do road hunt which helps and is legal in SD. We gave up hunting in KS on a regular basis about 5 years ago. I hunted 6 days last year near hays and shot about 4 birds total. I have a young shorthair and had to get her in the field or I would have skipped KS all together. I do agree hunting pivots in western KS may be the way to go. Those are hard to hunt though. To many escape routes.

That would mean moving further away from the fridge and beer contained within.

I'm not nearly as worried about the deer population. I'm still seeing hundreds at a time in some locations.

Me too! They're flourishing in my part of the world. I will say the one thing I haven't seen so far is the huge bucks. There are some decent sized ones but not the Collossus that I normally see.

Well, my second day out and I've filled my buck tag. Fastest I've ever filled. 5x5 whitetail with 20 5/8 inside spread. Went over 150.
Woulda went higher but his brow tines were only about 2 1/2 inches long. Gah! |

A doe opening day of bow. Probably won't have a chance to go again until November.
PS: G5 Montech broadheads suck when they hit bone.

I have a new crunch in my knee from my last bow hunt earlier in the week.
You'll never guess for $100 how that happened. Some good deer on cam, but no giants this year. We did find a dead buck with a 9"+ antler growing down from over it's eye that is pretty bad ass. |
