The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

If we don’t get an extension done, it’s crazy to think he could be an outright free agent that resets the asap market over what Bosa gets.

I'm just not sure what you're expecting.

We have a combination of things going on here:

1. We're deep into camp and have a good feel for how this roster will shake out already. There's not much to be discussed here.

2. There's really no position battles going on outside of WR, and we've beaten that conversation to death for months already. At this point, we're at "wait and see". It's not a matter of "if" some of these young guys work out, it's a matter of which will seize the opportunity, and we just have to wait and see.

3. We're fresh off yet another SB and we're returning most of that roster, so it's not like we have questions all over the place.

4. With all the success this regime has had, it's incredibly difficult to find things to be concerned about. Arguing against the regime is a bold move considering that they're likely to find success regardless of your concerns about a position group, so it feels like "old man yells at cloud".

5. Even the Great Debate of Skyy Moore is a distant memory. Even those of us who argued his skillset is fungible readily admit that if he becomes a high snap count player he'll produce.

It's anxiety about the team that makes for poppin' conversations. There isn't any right now.

All of Chiefs Kingdom is pretty much in a comatose. We're not worried about anything, and anything that we may have a smidge of anxiety over just isn't worth passionate debate because more than likely the Chiefs will win anyway and leave you looking like a spaz for no reason.

It's time to get comfortable with being comfortable.

But then he's playing his hand wrong. Just say you intend to play out your contract, go to camp, ball out, and get paid. What's to be gained from staying away unless you want your deal now?

God help us if Chris Jones shows up to camp ready to play. We'll be debating gunners again. It's like the total inverse of the Haley dark years - only now things are so GOOD that there's nothing to argue about.

Unnecessary risk of injury.

How many times have we seen guys tear ACLs in camp? Or pop an Achilles? Tear a shoulder.

Any of those things happen right now, his chances of getting a mega deal this upcoming offseason go way down with his age. For him to get the payday he wants, he needs to have another monster year and stay healthy.

His agent is probably advising him to stay in top shape and to not report till just before the regular season.

I can see the logic in paying the fines to avoid any possible risk of injury before it’s nessesary to take that risk…even if the fines are 2-3 million dollars. That amount is nothing when having a chance at a 100m+ deal this upcoming offseason.

I wish we knew what’s been offered.

I think that the risk is unwavering. You have more opportunities in camp, but missing camp makes the remaining opportunities that much more likely.

Maybe he's looking at OBJ, who came to camp early, played out his one year, and wasn't signed. I dunno. At some point though, absence makes the heart grow fungus.

It's like a kid that has a toxic family seeing another kids good natured warm family for the first time and thinking "wtf is going on here? They're boring."

Eh, I feel like there's things to discuss. How do our new tackles look? Is Smith back to how he played a few years ago? What's the rotation looking like for the WRs? How are the DBs holding up with Sneed missing out on most of TC and with a new safety back there? With the suspension of CE, how are our DEs looking especially our first rounder who will likely have to play more than we thought necessary to start the season?

These are things that people would have talked about in past off seasons especially in TC. Instead we get a random highlight here or there but no real discussion. I don't know, listening to the only decent radio guys who cover the chiefs in KC (c.dot and Rob) and Nate Taylor, this TC has been rougher than last year and there are a few questions marks. But I don't see anyone saying that here. What's the disconnect?

Since Mahomes left money on the table to keep other players around I fully expect Patrick to drill Chris Jones in the nut sack in practice once he arrives.

Verderame and Taylor discussed it recently. The Chiefs are boring. They're so good that they have much to discuss.

Is Donovan Smith gonna work? Well OBJ struggled badly and they made it work.
Is Chris Jones gonna get paid? Doesn't matter right now. He's under contract this year.
Are the rookies gonna produce? Who cares? This team isn't relying on them to be successful like other teams.

Andy and Toub have been in their positions for a decade, Spags for 4 years and Veach for 5. What's there to discuss there?

The Chiefs are a Dee Ford offside and botched OT drive from going to 5 straight Super Bowls.

Try to enjoy it. It's never gonna be this good again once this run comes to an end.
