And honestly, this hasn't just happened in the last 30 minutes. I've had this argument time and time again with people, and it's just taken a lot of talking and perspectives to get me to this point.

In fact, the very term "white people"as used today wouldn't have made sense centuries ago given the fact that we view whites in a much more homogenous manner today that in times past. Italians, Irish, etc. held virtually no power until relatively recently...that is to say nothing of the political makeup of the country prior to the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote.

As for the 2/5 part, I assume you're referring to the three fifths compromise. This compromise is completely misunderstood by most people...yourself included.

Treating slaves as only 3/5 of a person was the compromise. Slave owners wanted them treated as a full person. Abolitionists didn't want them counted at all.

Treating slaves as a full person wouldn't have given them new rights. It would have inflated the population of the south giving it more political representation in congress. The slave owners would, in essence, get an extra vote for every slave they owned. That's not really a plus for the slaves.

This doesn't really take away from your larger point, I guess. You should probably understand the history you're citing before basing your arguments on it, though.

"Cracker" is the one "derogatory towards Caucasians" word that I have a problem with. And it all has to do with the origin of the word. To my knowledge, that word is derived from the "crack" of the whip on a slave's back. That is most definitely something I don't want to be associated with, let alone referred to as, for I have enough faith in my soul and my ability to be empathetic, that regardless of how I was raised, I wouldn't have been able to force myself to crack a whip on another human being's back.

It's a work in progress I guess.
The simplest way I can explain why "reverse racism" slurs aren't as bad is that people who are in the majority don't wrap themselves in their majority trait.

Really tall people or really short people tend to be more conscious of their height than a guy who is 5'11.

A white person in the US doesn't really think about his own whiteness as much as he would if he moved to Asia.

A guy without a goatee might feel perfectly normal at a cocktail party in 2013, but that same guy might feel like an outsider at a Chiefs Planet get-together or if he went back in time to 1998.

I don't care for the attitude that "we did something to them". "We" didn't include me. I deal with each person as an individual regardless of the color of their skin. Afford me the same courtesy. I love black people and I love black people who like jokes because I have jokes. I spend my saturdays playing ball where I'm a minority and it's some of the most fun I have all week. Good folks come in all different colors.

I know it, and that's the point. Just because "redneck" isn't a bad slur, it could be used and intended as one.

Something else to add, in terms of the slavery aspect: blacks were rounded up and sold as slaves by fellow blacks. Blacks are as guilty of the slave trade as anyone. But it is only whitey that takes the blame.

There are more slaves in the world today than at any time in human history.

I've been scared shitless of snapping turtles ever since.
