The fate of Chris Jones 2023 edition

Appears the Chiefs and Chris Jones are at the beginning of a contract dispute

Speculation has been that the two sides are "far apart" on a deal

So Chiefs Planet.... how do we think this will play out (poll coming)

Will the Chiefs pay up and meet Chris Jones demands? If so, how much will it end up costing?

Will the Chiefs not be able to meet Chris Jones demands and end up trading him? If so, what kind of haul can we expect?

I've really loved watching Chris Jones wreck shit for the Chiefs, it always sucks when the business side of the NFL forces teams into tough decisions.

Mahomes can put 35 to 40 on the board pretty much anytime he wants. He's proven that. It's not like we have to have a defense that holds teams to 14 to 17 to win. Does it help? Absolutely! But it's not a deal breaker.
With Hill and Kelce and defenses playing single high, sure.

If KC's new LT is solid in pass pro. If Toney stays healthy and/or the WR hype at training camp holds, maybe...

Because Chris Jones is still one of the best players in the NFL, and THE best at his position. If he walks and we get nothing but a compensatory pick, that is a MAJOR disappointment. Tag and trade at the very least.

And he doesn't get to say "I'll play in 2023 if you promise not to tag." **** that. One year in which he is making like $25M to play or whatever he doesn't get to dictate that.

I think you're overestimating what a tag and trade can return. The tag is going to be $32.5M or w/e. He'd probably just be ok with playing on that. And no team is going to trade for him w/o working out a long term deal. And the Chiefs probably won't feel comfortable tagging him at that price w/o a deal in place.

The difference is that sack directly impacted the game. It was a close game, Cincy had the ball with a chance to drive into FG range with less than a minute left. They had already converted one third and 16 on that drive. That sack changed everything and forced the Bengals to punt and the rest is history.

Could KC have stopped them on that third down without the sack? Sure. Would Cincinnati have punted if it was fourth and short? Sure. That sack forced their hand and allowed for a good Moore return and a Mahomes scramble/15 yard RTP.

In no way is that sack and his missed one the year before the same as two years ago that missed sack never should have decided the game. It wouldn't have if not for KC's offensive meltdown.

On Arrowhead Pride they said Jones could be fined 1/18th of his salary (over $1M) for missing a preseason game. Although they didn't really go into detail on how that works, or if the fine is at the discretion of the team. So maybe he's headed back to KC so he doesn't miss the preseason game.
