But there's also a chance that he'll just be a highly paid game manager for the duration of the Harbaugh era.

Circumstances are a bigger question than talent with Herbert. And of course mental fortitude. It's Herberts 5th year as a starter. He's entering his prime. It's shit or get off the pot time for him. If he's going to make 'the leap' we'll see it next season or we won't see it at all.
They'll continue to add to the LOS, probably a RB.....maybe a weapon but they're gonna be an issue.

And lets not forget that Williams has been dropped into the worst QB development room in the league while JJ McCarthy hasn't even PLAYED. If the Vikings walk away from Darnold, I see no reason to believe that McCarthy won't pass Nix as soon as next season.

And they're just taking the tarp off Penix in Atlanta.

There's absolutely a chance that Nix ends up the 6th best QB from this class alone.

He's just going to be in that QB14-QB20 range for the next 10 years. It's gonna be glorious.

The thing about Herbert is that I'm not completely convinced he's any better now than he was as a rookie.

He just doesn't seem to have developed at all.

This year we've seen a little bit of a change but it's come at the expense of his direct impact on games. What they need to see to get over the hump is that he gets better than he was for the first 4 seasons but with the same sort of use rates.

Otherwise he's just a hyper-talented, very expensive, game manager.

He's thrown 430 passes this year. I don't think that's gonna end up being that much lower than a normal year.

Through 15 games?

Prior to this season he was throwing about 650/yr over 17 games.

500 vs. 650 is a MASSIVE difference. He's throwing 8-10 fewer passes/gm this season.

He's 12 in attempts overall.

Ahead of Josh Allen and Lamar.

looks like 2 QB's may end up with over 600 passing attempts, so it seems passing is down league wide.

Yeah he kinda reminds me of Brock Purdy, but I think Brock is more accurate downfield.

They’re gonna have to follow the Purdy plan and try to load that roster up for him if they ever want to get to the SB. The problem is Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes exist. So does CJ Stroud, Lamar, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow (if they can ever figure things out around him).

This isn’t the NFC where it’s Goff, Hurts and Love at the top. All the best are in this conference, 2 of which in your division.

They’re facing an uphill battle.

He's also played 1 more game than anyone but Nix (who has 70 more attempts than him).

He's gonna end up in the middle of the pack.

He was top 3 in the league in attempts/gm over his first 4 seasons.

And if you're a top 5 QB, you should be used that way. And Jackson's runs are 'use' just as Allens are. Herbert doesn't get used like that.

Well, for one I can see it being down for the simple reason that when you are throwing it to Josh Palmer and Quinton Johnson, you may opt to run it more that throw it until they can build that up a bit.

I'm sure some will say "If you can't do it without elite help you aren't an elite QB" to which I would respond by saying "read any current Mahomes thread"

And as a Chiefs fan, I KNOW lousy deep balls when I see them.
Yea. The WR had to stop and wait for the ball to get there. Never a good thing.

But Nix could have released the ball sooner? The protection was good from what I remember?

The Broncos have the best OL in the league per the analytics. You saw that last night with Nix getting clean pockets continuously despite facing Bosa/Mack.

He had open WR’s last night. Sutton is a very good #1 caliber player. Mims has been open and he just misses.

I get they could get a talented TE and RB to help him but the bottom line here is how much is that gonna help? I think this is pretty close to the ceiling for him. Might go a bit higher with added talent but at best he’s what?…..The 7th best QB in the conference?

You saw Herbert carry a team with no RB, no TE and one real weapon (McConkey) from an 11 point deficit and score 21 points in the 2nd half to win while Bo Nix could only lead his team to a FG in the 2nd half.

DJ made such a good point about scheme helping Nix. When that goes out the window he’s not near the QB you need.

Eh, I'm not gonna act like they have Saquon Barkley in the backfield either, though.

JK Dobbins looked fine until he broke down (as was expected) and Gus Edwards is...Gus Edwards. He exists.

If your WR and RB rooms look like the Chargers do and you have a 'premier' quarterback under center, you should be leaning on the QB. Especially if you seemingly have the protection taken care of with a plus OL.

And game script will be even more critical than scheme for him.

Can you EVER see a world where Nix does what Mahomes did to the Texans in 2019?

If Bo Nix is ever down 24-0 in a playoff game, turn out the lights because the party is over.

He simply doesn't have enough ways to beat you. He's very athletic and willing to use that mobility. He might be smart and he seems fairly accurate on short passes.

That's....Alex Smith. It's exactly Alex Smith.

That player can be a beloved teammated and winning player. He can be a very good QB. But he's ALWAYS going to be dependent on game script and a superior supporting cast to win games.

If you called him Poverty Lamar, you might not be far off. And the real problem is that Lamar (and Henry) CREATE some of the easy throws that Jackson gets because of just how dynamic a threat Jackson is with his legs.

Well Poverty Lamar doesn't get those easy throws because his legs, while dangerous, aren't so dangerous that you compromise your coverage schemes for it.

Poverty Lamar is Alex Smith. Or Jake Garcia. Or if you reaaaaaaaly squint, maybe you can get to Donovan McNabb?

But he'll never be that Rodgers or Mahomes or Young or even Elway sort who uses his legs to set up elite arm talent. Because he simply doesn't have it. Take away his legs and he's just a completely forgettable ball thrower. He's Jimmy Garoppolo.
