Was sitting in the shaded lower deck today and took in a helluva game as a Father’s Day gift from the wife.
As a veteran of a lot of Yankee games in that stadium, today was like almost every other time. The Yankees are world wide and they fill the seats. I found myself boring the daylights out of the wife as I told her how much I like those Yankee road uniforms. They were described by Jim Bouton in Ball Four as “beautiful in their simplicity” and I agree. Of course she didn’t understand at all so I continued to bore the crap out of her by repeating some of the best lines from the book. Especially the Joe Schultz “Let’s pound some Budweiser, boys”! After she got sick of me, I continued to bore the 8/9 year old kids that were sitting next to us as I told them where I was sitting during playoff games in the 70’s and 80’s and showed them some great YouTube clips from playoffs past. As the game wore on I kept telling them to keep a close eye on the scoreboard as there was something pretty special happening. Both of them picked up on it in the 6th. Then the no hit bid was broken up and they put up with me as I told them about the the no hitter Jim Colborn threw in 77 vs the Rangers. After that we chatted about game situations. Will he try to steal? Do you let him hit 3-0 in this situation? We came close to a few foul balls and in general had a great time. They got into it as Q got tossed and it was a blast, especially high fiving after that finish. As I sat there reveling in victory I was reminded of the closing quote from Ball Four, and it was true today. “You spend a good portion of your life gripping a baseball when in the end it was the other way around”. Great day. |

Maybe deserves its own thread, but I'll be economical about it. And yes, I'm posting the whole thing. Sue me.
Also, the biggest news here is JJ Picollo apparently said the word "shit," which would never come out of Dayton Moore's mouth (certainly not on the record). Around Bobby Witt Jr., Royals build a new culture and enter MLB’s modern era
Spoiler!

Good find, sib khat.
I’ve never thought of Sherman as a bad guy through this whole stadium situation. This article-at least for me - shows the changes the organization has made, are real and intentional. When you watch this team in person, they play a gritty style. Can’t help but enjoy that. |

Completely agree.
Also, you’re correct in the game thread from yesterday. I was just now going through the highlights and Schreiber’s appearance, and the game, go differently if Vinnie just hangs onto that ball from Hampson. It’s 2 out nobody on and there’s a good chance the Royals maintain a 2-1 lead. Also, the Royals have a true superstar in the making. I had a pretty good vantage point into the Yankee dugout and when Witt came to the plate most of the Yankee roster came to dugout railing to watch his AB’s. |

**** Abreu.
I'm not sure why so many people are down on the Pasquatch. If you take out the first 10 games of this season, then his numbers look wayyyyy better. In the 55 games since that terrible 10 game beginning he has a .262 BA - .340 OBP - .480 SLG - .820 OPS If you extrapolate his stats over the last 55 games this is what ya get. 53 2Bs - 6 3Bs - 20 HRs - 128 RBIs - 67 BBs - 89 SOs - 22 sacrifice flies. His HR numbers are lower than I'd expect, but his other numbers are really good. Last year 128 RBIs would have been good for 2nd in the ML and 53 2Bs would have been good for 2nd as well. He's been one of the best hitters in the league and outside of the first week and a half he's been the guy he was before his injury. |
