MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Sorry but Smith definitely has an accuracy problem throwing down the field.

12 for 40 on passes over 20 yards.

49% on intermediate throws (11-20 yards)

What's the average? That's far from his big weakness. It's over thinking, and trying not to make a mistake.

I dunno what the average is but 21 QBs were above 50% on intermediate throws.

He definitely declined in this area. Last year he hit 58%.

i've said this before, alex can do it, it's just he is risk averse, which in turn cut's down on his downfield pass efficiency. if he would stay prone in the passing motion while scrambling, rather than running for yards, again, his efficiency would increase. he's not a play extending scrambler, he is a oh shit i have no one to throw to so i will run quarterback.

Upgrade at QB or else I can't really get too excited about next year. Alex has peaked out and he leaves WAY too many points on the field for my liking. I want to blow mofos out, not just a "keep us in it" type QB. Recipe for getting F'd by the officials like we did against Pitt. Should have blown that overrated team out. NE handled them quite easily.



Hell, I know it's a long shot but I would give Indy, now that they have Ballard, ANYTHING they want for Andrew Luck. They are just waiting with their knee pads for this dude to take off. We NEED a NAME BRAND QB, PERIOD!!! Or else continue to expect getting disrespected in your house with a BS call like we always have done. Who can forget, "THIS ONE'S.....FOR....JOHN!"?

From 2015-2016, Alex Smith's QB rating when throwing intermediate (11-20 yards) dipped from 128.4 to 74.5. Comp. % dipped from 58.1 to 49.4.

The Chiefs intermediate passing game (11-20 yards) is terrible. Smith had the fewest intermediate completions (40) of any full time starter.

Alex Smith completed 42.9% of his throws over 10 yards. That was 25th in the NFL. Worse than Siemian, Wentz and Keenum.

i would have more respect for alex if he simply took advantage of defensive offsides with the free play. all he does is relax and wait for the ref to step in and stop it like a boxing match. he never goes for the knockout punch.
