MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Answer to the question? Yes. The Chiefs should move on from Smith if for no reason other than him taking his fan club with him to Cleveland. Or New Jersey.

Clark Hunt loves him some Alex Smith.

Though Smith’s passer rating ranked 16th in the NFL this season, Hunt said he was pleased with Smith’s performance.

“I thought Alex did a great job for us this year,” Hunt said. “Obviously when you have the success we had, a large part of it can be attributed to his play. He played a crucial role in a number of those games that I mentioned where we came back from big deficits. That was really something we’ve not done in recent history, and I thought that was an area of growth for the team, and also for Alex.”

And doesn't give a shit about this:

Hunt is aware that the Chiefs have not selected quarterback in the first round of the draft since Todd Blackledge in 1983, so by proxy, Hunt also understands why some fans might think the club won’t go that route, though he contends that’s not necessarily the case.

“If you’ve been a fan of the franchise for a long time, they haven’t seen us take a first-round quarterback and have him develop into a franchise player, and it’s been a while since we’ve taken a quarterback that high,” Hunt said. “Philosophically, there’s nothing against taking a first-round quarterback, and I think you can look at Andy (Reid) and John (Dorsey’s) history and see that they’ve done that.”

I don't doubt they don't have a philosophy against it. But, I wouldn't be surprised if they had a damn company policy against it. If they had a mission statement or company motto it would probably be something like :

Continued excellence of not drafting a 1st round QB bust for 34 years and counting.

It's been an embarrassing run of of inability and being unwilling to draft and develop a QB. How is it even possible? I think at least part of it was having 25 years of Peterson and Pioli who put little stock into the importance of drafting a QB high.

I'd feel a lot better about the situation if upper management distances themselves from Smith but realistically that just isn't classy. They'll tell the media that Alex is there guy all the way up to the point that they cut, bench or trade him.

And Clark wasn't really wrong in the second quote. Alex did add another comeback element to his game that he never had before.

Personally, I don't think the Hunt family has any standing order to not draft a first round QB...but I do think that part of trying to get extensions finalized promises are made to not draft a first round QB as a replacement for x amount of years.
