NfL owners meeting this week. 18 game schedule

NFL owners meeting this week to discuss potential for 18-game regular season

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's campaign to add an 18th game to the regular-season schedule is reportedly set to gain momentum during next week's annual owners meetings.

According to Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson, two NFL executives believe schedule expansion talks "will intensify" when the annual meeting talks place in Palm Beach, Florida from March 30 to April 2.

Those talks will be part of what is expected to be "more assertive efforts" from Goodell and team owners to talk schedule expansion this summer, according to Robinson.

The NFL has an option to opt out of many of its current broadcast deals after the 2029 season. The league could theoretically hope to get more money on a new deal if it can promise networks 18-game seasons after the current collective bargaining agreement expires in March 2031.

I know an 18 game schedule is coming, but it's bringing along with it the death of division rivalries. Everybody has four teams per division now - six division games. Your division is only going to be a third of your record. You could go 12 and 6, lose every division game, and win your division. It's going to happen.

They want an international team. It will have to be redrawn anyways.

They wouldn't be doing now if they weren't making bank.

The vast majority already have Netflix and Prime. A smaller, but still very large, number of people have Peacock.

It's the 80/20 rule. They will get their money one way or another.

Ahhh I get it now. I already have those apps. I get Amazon prime games for free, I love Netflix don't mind paying at all. Peacock is the only one that I dont like paying for to just watch the game.

I doubt one more game kills division rivalries. I do get your point about it watering down some, but winning the division is still the clearest/best path to the playoffs. If a team somehow gets swept by division opponents yet still wins the division that would almost be cool to see. Seems highly unlikely, though. Don't remember ever hearing of a team getting anywhere close to doing that.

Peacock finally came through with the last episodes of Yellowstone about 6 months later than anticipated.

I remember back in 2010 the Faiders did the exact opposite. They swept the AFC West, but not only did they not win the division, they missed the playoffs. Anything can happen.

To me it's not so much the one more game. It's the one more step in a process. Back in the Olden Tymes most divisions had 5 teams. You had 8 division games, home and away. That was half of a 16 game season. That was a really big deal. I know that my NFL experience is just a slice in the history of an institution but I don't like where it's going.

NFL always claims player safety when making changes yet they want to add an extra game which will lead to - more injuries, even with the bye.

Seems like a bad idea and a lot of hypocrisy in that decision.

Jeff Fisher's Rams used to do that.

Sweep the division, go 8-8

Oh you mean it’s going to be a huge success and make even more money for the NFL as the old whine asses die and the new whine asses don’t care?
