Furnace on the fritz

Last night as I got home from work I noticed my home was cooler than usual. I checked the thermostat, saw it was calling for heat, and headed to the furnace itself to see if I could figure anything out.

Anyway, I noticed that the furnace was trying to kick on, but would shut itself down after about 5-8 seconds. I noticed a light on the circuit board that would come on as the furnace was trying to start up, but then would turn off like the system was cutting power.

Anyone have any thoughts on what may be wrong?

Ask to keep the old board and look at the back. When they short out there will be a burn mark.

Sorry, I am late to arrive. I have been busy all day.

Normally the light on the board you were referring to earlier will flash a series of times. Generally, it will flash a couple of times pause, and then flash a couple or few more times. That would indicate a number, for example, lets say it flashes twice, and then after the pause, it flashes 3 times. That would reference the code of 23. There should be a legend on a sticker on the inside of the door of the furnace. That legend will have things like safety is open, or no flame, or failed induction.

Just a little info for the future.

One of the best parts of this entire ordeal has been explaining to people that I got my information on how to fix the problem on the internet from a Chiefs message board.

People have this look of bewilderment when I tell them.

I have a Trane furnace that is 20 years old, I had a guy come out from the company that actually installed the unit back in the day to get it checked out. I asked him if I should get a new one since it is getting older. He said Neech I've had these units go for 35 years, you can replace it if you want to it's your money.

So I'm just going to keep going with what I have.

So... The furnace did the same thing to me again today. A little suck and blow on the same hose and it fired back up.

Any idea why this seems to be a reoccurring theme?

There is a pressure sensor that is trying to go out or you have a hose that is collapsing.

I'd say your furnace took a peak at your 'Carson Wentz or Patrick Mahomes?' thread and said, "This guy needs an attitude adjustment."

It sounds like you're inadvertently incentivizing the furnace to feign a breakdown.

Maybe have your wife do it next time in case the furnace is gay.

Hey HVAC experts… AC is on the fritz and spent the day troubleshooting, but couldn’t figure anything exact out. Anything I might be overlooking before calling some HVAC Company on Monday?

Overall issue: Nest thermostat was showing a E183 error indicating a problem with the Y wire. Also outside unit not turning on.

I thought it might be the contactor. Went to outside unit. It would manually turn on fine when manually pushed. Then I checked for 24v coming in and got nothing. So I’m thinking the contactor may be fine and it just is t receiving voltage to engage.

I checked the control board with a multimeter. 24v properly coming into the board from the transformer. Again nothing at Y. I could see voltage properly come through green and white when thermostat called for heat or the fan. The control board LED is blinking a continuous slow steady red indicating no problem. I tried jumping the red and yellow to see if that would kick on the outside unit, but no luck.

So I can’t figure it out. Faulty Y wire somewhere? Just seems strange I can’t see voltage on the Y coming in from the thermostat, but also don’t see anything to the outside unit when jumping either. Anything additional I should look at?
