I don't remember my childhood grocery stores, but at various points in my life my "regular" grocery stores have included at a minimum National, Kroger, Schnucks, HEB, Tom Thumb, and King Soopers. I'm sure there were more when I was a kid.

I have no idea what the name of the store was (probably didn't have one), but I do remember one of the items that my mother picked out: a very large glass container of pickled onions.

Nope. In fact, I think I've only been in Kansas City maybe 4 or 5 times in my life, nearly all for Chiefs games.

A&P in the Prairie Village shopping center. I remember lobsters swimming around in a huge aquarium. I don't remember much about any food in particular.

A&P and Milgrams's in South KC. My worst was the old Hen House at Blue Ridge and Bannister, man that place really smelled bad

Fifty years past, and I can still remember walking up and down the aisles of Sorrel's Red and White Store with my mom and grandma. Red and White's were a chain of small, independently owned grocery stores which have nearly died out...I remember there was a butcher in the rear of the store that looked like a butcher is supposed to look....Starched, pressed shirt, crisp white apron, and called his customers by name when he recited all the specials of the day.
We also shopped quite a bit at the Winn-Dixie store. I don't have any specific memories of it as a child save one. It had a long covered sidewalk which stretched from the front of the building out to almost the end of the parking lot, with parking places along each side of the walk. It looked like something an old fashioned drive-in restaurant would have. I guess it was a convenience for shoppers to carry their groceries out to the car without getting drenched if it was raining. The covered walk was torn down when I was still just a child. Winn-Dixie would eventually become my first "real" job years later... Oh, by the way, this was in the small town of New Smyrna Beach, Florida... Last edited by mikey23545; 07-13-2011 at 06:09 AM.. |

Bob's IGA on 64th Street in the Northland. I think it was the nice grocery store in that area for a few years, until Hen House and HyVee came in and took over.
I think I may remember it more for the Baskin Robbins that was next to it. |
