Carroll's Comments on Sanchez

I know this has been posted in other threads but I thought it deserved a little personal attention since there seem to be a lot of USC fans on here.

Is it just me or did Pete Carroll come off like a total asshole in his comments about Sanchez leaving? I can't find the full quote yet but he made it clear that he thought it was a terrible decision and Sanchez is not ready. I am usually a fan of Carroll and as someone who lives in L.A. (although not a USC fan) I think he is a great ambassador for college football who carries himself with a lot of class.

What's with his complete lack of support?? Any USC fans wanna enlighten me?

Well, we disagree on this one. I've listened to other interviews Pete did, and he doesn't come within a stone's throw of calling Mark an idiot. He said Mark was making a decision that the percentages didn't support. He said that Mark is going against the grain and they didn't see eye-to-eye on the decision. If you interpret that as tantamount to calling him an idiot, then so be it.

I'd be curious as to what the failure rate is for Senior QB's. And I'd also like to see a breakdown on this 62% number and see how it was arrived at.

I bet the senior failure rate is comparable, yet Carroll wants to hang his hat on stats, while ignoring the fact that Sanchez gets jack shit if he suffers a significant injury after returning.

By PC bringing it out in the media, one of two things is going to happen:

Sanchez will not be a 1st round pick, and will look stupid for declaring, or he will he a high pick, and Carroll will look stupid for making an issue out of it publicly.

Someone is going to lose, and it didn't have to be this way. What's so hard about keeping this in-house?

I think he was talking about underclassmen QBs, but am not sure. I think the more compelling data point is that of number of college starts in relation to success in the NFL.

IMO Pete used the stats to illustrate what the best set of circumstances might be for Mark to come out and be successful. I don't think people would argue that Mark has put himself in the best situation in terms of preparation and experience to be a productive NFL QB.

I admit I thought Pete could have handled the press conference better. But I also think that he had the player's best interests at heart. FWIW, I thought that this interview a bit later was more indicative of how he felt.

Maybe he was hoping the kid would change his mind. As long as he didn't talk to an agent he could have had a change of heart.

Which is fine, I pointed that out earlier.

But is calling him out in public the only way that Carroll feels is going to get Mark to change his mind?

Again, I have NO problem with Carroll having this opinion.

I have a huge problem with taking it to the media.

SOUNDED like pete is covering his own ass, you know if sanchez fails pete can tell the next HS qb who he's sitting with "well sanchez failed but i told him so' classless douchebag thing to do. like i said in another post self serving, the "i care about my players" is now "i care about them as long as they do as i want"

Sanchez could get insurance and I'm sure boosters would have set him up* if he returned. Plus, if the advisory board is correct and he doesn't get drafted until the second round then he will have lost millions.

*Without violating any NCAA rules of course.

I think it was his last opportunity. According to Carroll everyone but Sanchez thought he should return - advisory board, coaches, his parents, etc.

That's the thing, it WASN'T his last opportunity.

Sanchez has (well, had) 4 days to rescind his decision. Michael Oher took advantage of this option last year. This is assuming he hasn't hired an agent.

I'm not sure how anyone can justify a coach doing this to one of his players.

Don't really know - maybe it was because he had cooled down. If you believe everyone involved, Pete and Mark had been up discussing it late into the night after Pete had just returned from vacation in Hawaii. Pete is a passionate guy and probably isn't used to Mark not listening to his counsel.
