Won't that make his cap hit down the road even worse? His cap number is almost $28 million in 2023 which is insane, I can't imagine that number going any higher. I think you just have to bite the bullet in 2021 and let him go after the season.

Of course it will make his cap hit worse down the road.

The problem is that while I agree with you it's probably best to just move on, I don't think they will. Extending him is probably the more realistic option.

Yeah, Mahomes is cheap.

The good news is that his balloon may just coincide with bigger TV contracts, meaning he goes back to being cheap shortly after his contract kicks in anyway.
