The Pioli Watch Thread

I'm hijacking the thread starter to use for an "updates" area. Sorry cardken. Here are a few recent updates:

Pioli would find a warm welcome in Kansas City. At the last Chiefs' home game, shortly after the embattled Carl Peterson resigned after 20 years as president, general manager and CEO, several signs were spotted in the crowd proclaiming, "We want Pioli." Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Scott Pioli talks with Kansas City

By John Tomase and Ron Borges | Tuesday, January 6, 2009 | http://www.bostonherald.com | N.E. Patriots

Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli met with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt yesterday to interview for Kansas City’s general manager job.

It’s unclear where the two met, though sources said it was not in Kansas City. The interview was Pioli’s second in as many weeks, coming on the heels of a meeting with Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner in New York.

Pioli is considered the hottest general manager on the market, thanks to the three Super Bowl titles he helped orchestrate with the Patriots [team stats]. He might decide to stay in New England, but there are reasons to go to Kansas City, where fans held signs proclaiming, “We want Pioli,” during the team’s final home game. The roster is loaded with young, cheap players, the team projects to be $30 million under the salary cap, and renovations on Arrowhead Stadium are scheduled to be completed by 2010, giving the team what will amount to a new home.

On the downside, Pioli might not receive the total control he is believed to seek. His predecessor, Carl Peterson, served as president, general manager and CEO for 20 years, and Hunt told reporters in December he planned to split the job in two, with one hire handling all aspects of the football operations and another taking control of the business side.

The 43-year-old Hunt is six weeks older than Pioli and counts Patriots president Jonathan Kraft among his closest friends in the game, which should give him some insight into Pioli.

Meanwhile, the Browns are preparing to interview Ravens director of pro personnel George Kokinis for their GM job on Sunday.

Kokinis is not available until then because he has to help Baltimore prepare for a playoff tilt with the Titans on Saturday. He also is doing advanced work on the Steelers and Chargers, one of whom the Ravens would face if they reach the AFC title game. Trying to speak with the Browns before then would not be practical.

Kokinis is seen in Cleveland as a package deal with Eric Mangini, who is reportedly the frontrunner to become coach. Kokinis worked with Mangini in Cleveland in the 1990s under Bill Belichick and serves on the board of Mangini’s charity.

The two men are both Connecticut natives and graduates of respected liberal arts colleges, with Mangini earning a degree from Wesleyan and Kokinis from Hobart.

What’s unclear is if Kokinis has decided to accept the interview or how comfortable he’d be turning a close personal relationship with Mangini into a close professional one.

This is all relevant to Pioli because if the Browns hire Mangini, as Lerner reportedly is leaning toward doing, it likely would eliminate Pioli from consideration as GM, thanks to the fallout from Mangini’s involvement in Camera-gate.

The last of the UCLA connection is gone. They took Lynn Stiles name down as VP of Football Operations.

Hopefully after the PC tommorrow Bob Moore hits the road.

like i said, i find it amusing to see what headlines you guys can come up with. I wouldn't pay $5 for a subscription because on the off chance any of it was legit, it would be on espn/fox sports/etc. ProFootballTalk.com has much more credibility.

REPORT: PIOLI INTERVIEWS WITH CHIEFS
Posted by Mike Florio on January 6, 2009, 8:08 a.m.
The Boston Herald, presumably hoping to improve on its Mendoza-ish batting average when it comes to matters relating to the potential employment opportunities of Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli, reports that Pioli interviewed on Monday with the Chiefs for the team’s vacant G.M. position.
The Associated Press reports that a meeting will occur, and that it possibly happened Monday.
Owner Clark Hunt has said that the job formerly held by Carl Peterson — G.M./President/CEO/King Of The Rain Forest — will be split into two jobs, with one person running the football operation and one person handling business matters.
Based on presumably erronoeous reports that Pioli’s demands include something akin to the rights to first-born children, some might think that Pioli will want Peterson’s full position, or nothing.
But we’ve seen or heard nothing to indicate that Pioli wants to do anything other than run a football operation. Which would mesh with, you know, his qualifications.
Maybe the Chiefs never went to a Super Bowl in 20 years under Peterson because Peterson was spread too thin between the football business and the business business. If we had the keys to an NFL franchise (and fans of the 32 NFL franchises should thank God every night that we don’t), we’d separate the two areas — because they are two separate and distinct areas.
It’s still unclear whether Pioli is ready to leave the New England nest. Based on rampant reports linking former Jets coach Eric Mangini to the Browns, it appears that Pioli’s options currently will be jump to Kansas City, or to stay put.
Unless, of course, another suitor emerges unexpectedly. Our friends at ESPN Radio in Tampa have been pushing hard for the Bucs to fire coach Jon Gruden and G.M. Bruce Allen and pursue Pioli. Our guess is that, even if someone else wanted to jump into the fray, they’d need to be damn sure that Pioli would take the job before dumping the people that currently have in place.
And that’s one of the overlooked factors in this entire process of changing coaches and General Managers. It’s easy to get rid of the existing employees; it’s hard to be confident that you can get the people you want to replace them.

John Clayton just said on Mike and Mike that the meeting went very well. He expects Pioli to get hired and for Herm to get fired. Not facts, just what he said so take it for its worth. John usually is right on top of things though so i feel pretty confident this is going down

Interesting. I had really hoped Clark would interview the Ravens candidates and perhaps a few others.

If Clark was really impressed on Pioli and makes the decision then i guess its worth it....

Like i said earlier i would've been happy with one of these 3, Pioli, Polian or Decosta.
