2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: ![]() Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

3 questions. Two are serious, and the other really isn't. But I'll ask them anyways.
1. What is a deal you guys WOULD make for Myers? 2. What would be a good deal for Hosmer? 3. From Al's statement on the Texas impression...why not offer Josh Hamilton 2 years and $45 million? ![]() |

Disclaimer: I know I'm passing along hearsay from a friend, which isn't worth much. A friend of mine works for the Royals and encounters DM from time to time.
He told me about one trade that was on the table about a year and a half ago. It involved a pitcher that some on here specifically mentioned as a trade target. My friend says that DM had all the pieces to the deal in place, but couldn't pull the trigger because Glass wouldn't sign off on taking on the salary. So that part is depressing. The other part of the story is that the trade involved Myers, but since that time, Myers has become virtually untouchable. Of course, the Royals will entertain strong offers, as they should, but my friend is convinced that the Royals will demand a lot in return for Myers. So hopefully Dutton is way off on that part.

You might be thinking of Evan Longoria's new extension with Tampa.

I'm not as married to Myers as many of you guys simply because he hasn't done anything at the major league level yet and without pitching we still aren't going to seriously compete even with Myers on the team. Don't get me wrong... I don't WANT to trade him and I wouldn't do it for Lester. I MIGHT for the younger Shields. We could (hopefully) replace Frenchy anyway even if it's just with a minor leaguer.
I don't know... it's a tough choice. To really get what we need most tough choices are likely going to have to be made though.

Trading Myers is fine. It's trading him straight up for two years of expensive control of Shields or Lester that would be a problem.

I dunno... Keeping in mind Myers hasn't swung a bat in the majors... someone like Kris Medlen might be intriguing. Not just him straight-up, I'd want 1 or more prospects coming with him, but he'd be the primary "who we get in 2013" replacement for Hoch. Babip is low, but he's an extreme ground-ball pitcher so it could be real.
Moderately less than what I'd want for Myers. A halfway decent 1B/DH guy shouldn't be hard to find.

It's still a tough decision imo.

I'm fine with giving up an unproven rookie for a promising pitcher who has seen action.

I would be sad to see truly promising players like Myers go, but that will probably be what it takes to complete a trade for a SP who is worth a damn. I do, however, question the benefit that a quality pitcher brings to the team when it means that Frenchy is starting again in RF. If he performs in 2013 like he did in 2012, it would be a hell of a difficult thing for a pitcher to make up for by himself, assuming that Myers would play at about the league average in his first year.

Regardless of anything else, my expectation in 2013 is 82, minimum. Period, no excuses.
Maybe we won't make the playoffs, but I expect a winning season, and I'll be pissed if it doesn't happen.

He's the white Jair Jurrjens. I really don't want a part of him for Myers. He's tiny (5-10, 180), he's already had injury problems, he has marginal stuff, and he hasn't even pitched a full season in the majors.

I'm looking at three players for 2013:
Duffy, Paulino, and Odorizzi. How the first two recover and how the last emerges could say a lot about our chances, IMO. |
