Proposed 2013 Slogan: Tigers: They're what's for dinner

Dayton Moore has pushed all his chips in and is riding on King/Jack suited, hoping it comes together, he gets some good luck, and he hits the nuts by the river card. There's potential, oh yes, there's potential. There's also risk.

At the midway point, Dayton is left counting on the river card. The flop and turn didn't help him, and he's looking at the Tigers holding a pair of Queens and the Indians holding a pair of 9s. His 2013 plan hasn't failed - yet - but the odds are not in his favor.

Burning questions updates below.

Burning Questions for 2013:

1) Will the improve rotation be improved enough? Does James Shields pitch like a fringe No. 1 away from Tampa Bay? Does Ervin Santana pitch to his highest upside in his walk year? Can Jeremy Guthrie build on his strong performance as a Royal in 2012? Can Wade Davis bring his new mentality- and velocity - back to the rotation?

Midseason check-in: Yes, the rotation is certainly improved enough. Shields has pitched like a fringe No. 1 and Santana is having his best season. Guthrie has horrible peripherals but has continued to perform well at his home park and eat innings on the road. Davis brought neither his kick-ass mentality or improved velocity back to the rotation and is in Luke Hochevar/Hiram Davies territory.

2) When will Luke Hochevar be shown the door?
Midseason check-in: It appears, never, at this point. Hochevar has been solid in non-leverage situations, though pretty much every time he has been used with men on base in an inning, it has been a disaster.

3) Does Hosmer bounce back?
Midseason check-in: It took some time, but Hosmer's performance from June 1 on is probably the most encouraging thing about the 2013 season so far.
4) Can Moustakas hit for a whole season like he did in the first half of 2012?
Midseason check-in: Nope. Moustakas was god-awful, then great for about 3 weeks, then god-awful again. He has been better since he started working with Brett and Grafol but still has a long way to go.
5) Who regresses?
Midseason check-in: Welp, Alicides Escobar is not a surprising name here (though Yost's stubborn insistence on hitting him second is ridiculous). Billy Butler is a surprise. He isn't having a terrible year - still contributing a lot to the offense - but he's not hitting for the average or power he has displayed over the past several years.
6) Who plays 2B?
Midseason check-in: A whole bunch of people, and not that great. Gio is at least getting a shot, though he once again is not doing much with it.
7) Can Jeff Francoeur be at least replacement level, rather than epic horrible level?
Midseason check-in: Hahahahahahahahahahaha
8) Will Dayton Moore survive to see 2014?
Midseason check-in: Outlook uncertain. Probably still around, unless the team completely tanks in the second half and he does something foolish. My guess - he sacrifices Ned Yost this offseason and gets one more shot with a new manager in 2014.
9) Will Danny Duffy come back healthy? And if he does, is he the same, better or worse?
Midseason check-in: Yes. Velocity looks the same, and it looks likely he is the same guy as before.
10) And the big one: Has KC added enough to run down the big-money Detroit Tigers?
Midseason check-in: Doesn't look like it, does it?

It seems that every time someone makes a somewhat reasonable trade suggestion, there's always someone who essentially says that.

I thnk there are fewer questions with Duffy than with Ventura.

Size is not an issue. He's also a LHP who sits at 94-05 and can pump 98-99 from the left side. Good changeup and solid/improving curve to pair with that makes him pretty valuable.

Ventura has absolutely electric stuff, but his stature is a concern, and he has had more control problems than Duffy. I love the guy, but if choosing between the two, I take Duffy.

He has come back from the injury and shows no concerns there. He also is on a different level as a prospect and in terms of potential than Affeldt, IMO.

Will Duffy be better than 17-22 and 4.77 ERA in five years of service? That was Affeldt's production for the Royals. Affeldt missed time due to injury as well.

Kendrick is a 4 WAR player at a premium position with a club-friendly contract signed for the next two years after this one. Let's be realistic abotu what it would take to get a player of that caliber.

If the Royals don't make some kind of a trade for a 2nd baseman, I think it's time to bring up Colon. He batted .311 in July. He's batting .334 with four homers over the last ten games. Colon is not on the 40 man Roster so a move would have to be made. The Royals have Giavotella, Getz, and Falu on their 40 man roster. If Giavotella is hurt and he goes on the disabled list, the move could be made to add Colon to the 40 man roster.

I think his floor is what we were seeing last year before he went down with the TJ, probably with a little bit better control (4.00 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 1 K/IP seems like a decent target for his floor). I refuse to talk about W-L in any way other than to deride it, so I'll ignore that part of the equation.

I'm pretty confident Duffy will be better than Affeldt was.

Not saying I disagree with you and I think a trade for Kendrick should happen if they ask for either one. If the Royals worry that either guy will turn out to be a reliever then they shouldn't be bothered trading them away.

You know what Kendrick brings, but you have no clue what the Duff-man, Zimmer or Ventura bring. To me Zimmer is the guy I'd never trade because he's in the rotation next year regardless. Duffy would be 2nd, and Ventura the most likely I'd trade. Probably a Ventura + Colon + Crow. Something like that could work for them.

Realistically?

One top 50-type prospect who is close to MLB-ready + some additional pieces.

I wouldn't balk at Ventura being the main piece... I would balk at another top 50 prospect (especially Mondesi) and another top 100 prospect being the other pieces that go that way. I can't say this enough re: Mondesi... what he is doing at his age is MORE impressive than what Jurickson Profar did. Look at their ages, their league affiliations, and what they did. Mondesi is putting up the same numbers Profar did at age 17... but he's doing it an entire level HIGHER than Profar was at age 17.

Ventura + Cuthbert + Kyle Smith seems about right. Orlando Calixte, Brett Eibner, Jason Adam, Christian Colon, Johnny Giavotella also could be mix/match pieces for that trade.

Not a murderers row, but a pretty good lineup. And gives them that additional RH bat they really need to balance things out.
